Punchestown – along with the likes of Vaal in South Africa – is often a graveyard for Australian punters on a Saturday night as they try to dig their way out of trouble following a tough day on the punt.
That wasn’t the case for one of our punters – that we have dubbed the Punchestown Guru – and he was able to turn $10 into $8736 with an outstanding three-leg multi.
The multi started – like most multis do – with a short-priced favourite and the Punchestown Guru backed Josies Orders to win the Dooley Cross Country Steeplechase.
Josies Orders received a lovely run in transit and there was never any cause for concern for the Punchestown Guru as Josies Orders ran away from his rivals in the final stages to record an eight and a half lengths win.
It was the next leg in which this multi got very interesting – the Punchestown Guru backed Saldier to win the Grade 1 Champion Four Year Old Hurdle at a juicy $26.
The Willie Mullins-trained Salider had some issues with his jumping at his past two race starts and was settled at the tail of the field early, but he picked-up impressively when asked for an extra effort from jockey Robbie Power and he was able to lead home a Mullins first four.
More importantly, he moved the Punchestown Guru to only one leg away from a massive multi win.
You would think that the Punchestown Guru may have taken a more conservative approach for his final leg, but that isn’t how the Guru goes about his business and he backed Meri Devie to win the Ballymore Handicap Hurdle at $16.
It didn’t look good for the Punchestown Guru was Meri Devie drifted out to $22 just before the start of the race and it was a genuine slog in the final stages, but Meri Devie was able to outstay stablemate C’est Jersey to record a tough win.
The Punchestown Guru was able to turn $10 into $8736 and we like to think that he celebrated with a late-night Kebab!
