The World When England Last Won a World Cup

Cocky are the cockney’s.

Wouldn’t you know it, Germany’s sudden World Cup exit on Thursday morning has the English up and about.

It’s been a while since there’s been this much hullabaloo surrounding an English World Cup side, but with two wins next to their name, it’s probably time we took the poms somewhat seriously.

It’s probably no coincidence, but looks like the bookies have been paying attention too – England have firmed all the way into $8.00 as the outright World Cup winner. Don’t look now, but that’s placed The Three Lions fourth behind Belgium, Spain and the favourites Brazil.

There’s no reason England can’t go on to win it from here. If you need further convincing, just look at Harry Kane, but there’s no doubt it’s been a while in between drinks for the English. Try 52-years to be exact, with the poms last World Cup win coming back in 1966.

With a sniff of the trophy, let’s do the time warp and rewind to what the world was like when England last won it all!

Music

The Beatles Take Over

It was a big year for John Lennon and the boys. Their album “Revolver” was released and sat No. 1 for six weeks straight, while The Beatles also announced that they are indeed, “more popular than Jesus”. The Beatles also played their last ever concert in California, oh, and love was also in the air. Lennon met Yoko Ono on November 9, giving way to our first (but not last) Simpsons reference.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience Forms

With London as their landscape, Jimi Hendrix and his pals Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox put their heads together to form what was one of the most radical and influential groups in music history. The band went on to release three albums, while Hendrix himself released singles “Purple Haze” and “All Along the Watchtower”.

Sports

Wilt Chamberlain Breaks NBA Career Scoring Record

Hands down one of the greatest achievements not only in basketball, but sports history. Chamberlain dropped 100-points for the Philadelphia Warriors in 1962, helping him then set the NBA career points-scoring record in 1966 with 20,880. That record stood for nearly two decades until Kareem Abdul-Jabbar burst onto the scene 18-years later.

St. Kilda’s Last (Only) Premiership

Im’a let you finish, but Barry Breen had one of the greatest Grand Final performances of all time!

Turns out the Sainters and England share something in common. St. Kilda haven’t won a flag since, but aside from some of the great bumps off the ball, Breen booting the winning point to break open the stalemate is a great footy moment.

Muhammad Ali vs. George Chuvalo

March 29, 1966 marked the first of two fights between Ali and Chuvalo. Ali won both fights on points, but this first bout was particularly vicious. In his typical style, “The Greatest” mocked Chuvalo in the lead up to the fight, but the Canadian, given just 17-days notice, pushed Ali to 15-rounds.

TV

Batman

“When you wear a mask and create a character, nothing will pigeonhole you faster”.

Turns out Adam West was wrong, because after Batman debuted on January 12, 1966, being turned into a cartoon character nearly four decades later will then pigeonhole you even more.

Play School

Play School has come a long way over the years, but it’s crazy to think the concept of the show has basically remained the same. The only major change came in the form of Big Ted, who was once named, Bear.

Walt Disney Dies

Animation and film producing wasn’t the only thing Walt Disney was known for. He was also a heavy chain smoker, and a lover of filter-less cigarettes. Disney died during the making of The Jungle Book in December 1966 of lung cancer.

Action Man

The sixties was a huge decade for toys, and Action Man was the one every boy wanted. First launching in Britain in 1966, Action Man is still available in stores to this day.
