Blue Jays’ World Series Odds Go From 200-1 to 80-1 as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Era Gets Underway

  • The Toronto Blue Jays are 3-0 since Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was called up
  • They now own a 14-14 record and sit third in the AL East
  • The St. Louis Cardinals are a true World Series contender and have the best record in baseball over the last 20 games (15-5)

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is the hottest prospect Major League Baseball has seen in a long, long while.

The Toronto Blue Jays have won three straight games since his call-up and have now moved back to .500 on the season.  The reversal in fortune has caught the attention of odds makers as you can see in the latest World Series odds.

2019 World Series Odds

Team 2019 World Series Odds at Bovada
Los Angeles Dodgers +450
New York Yankees +450
Houston Astros +500
St. Louis Cardinals +1000
Tampa Bay Rays +1000
Philadelphia Phillies +1100
Boston Red Sox +1500
Toronto Blue Jays +7500

*Odds taken 04/30/19

There may be a buzz in the city of Toronto with the arrival of their new star but it’s definitely too premature to consider them World Series contenders. +7500 is a nice price for a lottery ticket if you want some skin in the game similar to Leicester City fans a few years ago, but outside of the entertainment I can’t make the case it’s a wise investment. That said, there is a team in the middle of this board that I do love for the value they provide.

Cardinals a Contender in Wide Open National League

The St. Louis Cardinals have come out of the gate hot this season with an 18-10 record and lead the NL Central by three games. This is a team to be feared and you can still have them at +1000 at Bovada.

The Cardinals’ +31 run differential is the best in the National League and the third best in all of baseball.

Marcell Ozuna is playing like an MVP candidate ranking top three in both home runs with 10 and RBI with 28. Pairing him with off-season acquisition Paul Goldschmidt has given the Cardinals a feared offensive lineup. Their +31 run differential is the best in the National League and the third best in all of baseball.

One cause for concern is the Cardinals’ pitching staff. Adam Wainwright is the only starter with an ERA under 4.00 and he’s posted a 3.96 mark despite a 1.36 WHIP which suggests a market correction could come soon. That said, Miles Mikolas and Jack Flaherty should rebound from a slow start to the season to give St. Louis a pair of options they can trust come the stretch drive.

Also to be considered are the Cardinals’ deep pockets come the trade deadline. They didn’t flinch trading for Goldschmidt and instantly offering him a five-year, $130 million extension. If St. Louis is in the hunt come the deadline, they will surely be buyers which could add any missing pieces to the rotation they would need.

Fade the Blue Jays and Jump on the Cardinals

While Toronto is a nice story that’s just about all they are.  St. Louis, however, has put themselves in prime position with a hot start and show no signs of slowing down in a wide open National League. Jump on them before the value fades as this +1000 payout won’t be available forever.

Pick: St. Louis Cardinals (+1000)
