Dwayne Haskins Given 7-1 Odds to Win 2019 NFL OROY

  • Dwayne Haskins was selected 15th overall by the Washington Redskins
  • He currently sits second in NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds
  • Is Haskins a good bet to take home the hardware?

The 2019 NFL Draft has come and gone, and the Washington Redskins solved their problem at quarterback by selecting Dwayne Haskins.

For a team long rumored to be in the Josh Rosen sweepstakes, Washington got a gift. In unexpected fashion, the New York Giants skipped over Haskins and took Duke QB Daniel Jones.

Now Haskins finds himself in a situation where it’s not out of the realm of possibilities he could start. And if he starts, could he win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year Award?

2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds

Player Drafted Odds at BetOnline
Kyler Murray, ARZ 1st Round, 1st Overall +250
Dwayne Haskins, WAS 1st Round, 15th Overall +700
Josh Jacobs, OAK 1st Round, 24th Overall +900
Marquise Brown, BAL 1st Round, 25th Overall +1000
Mecole Hardman, KC 2nd Round, 56th Overall +1000
Drew Lock, DEN 2nd Round, 42nd Overall +1200
TJ Hockenson, DET 1st Round, 8th Overall +1200
Deebo Samuel. SF 2nd Round, 36th Overall +1600
N’Keal Harry, NE 1st Round, 32nd Overall +1600
Daniel Jones, NYG 1st Round, 6th Overall +1800

*Odds taken 04/29/19

Despite being the third quarterback off the board, Haskins has the second-best Offensive Rookie of the Year odds.

With the draft being defense-heavy in the first round, draft status plays a limited role. 20th overall pick Noah Fant has the 14th-best OROY odds.

Dwayne Haskins’ Path to Starting

If you had told the Redskins nine months ago that they were drafting Dwayne Haskins, they’d probably feel pretty good about it. That means that they’d have Alex Smith for him to sit behind for a year.

Now they don’t.

Washington Redskins QB Depth Chart

Quarterback NFL Experience
Alex Smith 166 Games, 161 Starts
Case Keenum 57 Games, 54 Starts
Colt McCoy 38 Games, 27 Starts
Dwayne Haskins 0 Games, 0 Starts

Despite that, the Redskins have still taken precautions at the quarterback position.

After the Broncos brought in Joe Flacco, Washington was the landing spot for Case Keenum. So with Smith expected to miss 2019, Keenum is the default starter in April, with Haskins fighting for the backup job.

But let’s say Haskins flexes that first-round muscle in training camp. Could he make waves as a rookie starter?

Dwayne Haskins Has the Tools, But Could Be in Tough

Depending on who you talk to, the answer differs. Joel Klatt, for one, thinks Haskins could be Okay:

His new head coach, Jay Gruden, also doesn’t believe in drafting a QB in the first round just to sit him:

When you draft a rookie quarterback… you don’t have a lot of time. You expect these guys to play. – Jay Gruden

His draft profile coming from NFL.com however? Preaches a more patient approach:

He has the arm talent, confidence and pocket savvy to become a good NFL starter if he’s protected and given the time to develop early on. – NFL.com

Is Dwayne Haskins Worth it in Offensive Rookie of the Year Race?

At this point, no.

While his coach gives the indication he’ll play, and Klatt thinks he fits the system, Washington doesn’t have the weapons.

After Josh Doctson and the sometimes-healthy Jordan Reed, there isn’t much else.

In terms of names we do like? Josh Jacobs (+900) will get a lot of usage in Oakland, and Mecole Hardman (+1000) could find himself in a high volume spot in Kansas City.

Since 2011, just two QBs have taken home rookie of the year honors. Expect the struggles to continue for the signal callers in 2019.
