2019-20 Champions League Winner Favored to Come From England or Spain

  • Manchester City are tipped for glory ahead of Barcelona
  • Near-decade of  dominance by La Liga and EPL  in Europe
  • PSG, Juventus and Bayern Munich are all outsiders

It was in 2013 that the Champions League was last won by a team from outside of Spain or England. And the score in that particular contest is Spain five to England’s one.

Bayern Munich’s triumph six years ago was an all-German affair against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

Since then Real Madrid have won four times and Barcelona once.

Now with English power resurgent after Liverpool’s victory last season, the oddsmakers believe that this season’s winner will again come from the land of the almighty Premier League.

UCL 2019-20 Winning Nation Odds

Winning Nation Odds at Bovada
England +150
Spain +240
Italy +650
Germany +700
France +800
Any Other +1600

*Odds taken at 31/08/19.

Istanbul Calling for Final

At Bovada, the price on an English success at the final in Istanbul next May is +150. For a Spanish win its +240. Both are good value, with Barcelona the most likely victors as they seek to atone for last season’s stunning semi-final exit against Liverpool.

Italy, which hasn’t had a winner since Inter Milan in 2010, is at +650 and Germany is +700.

France, which is home to mega-rich Paris St Germain, but has only ever delivered one winner, way back when Marseille were successful in 1993, is offered at +800.

With the last winner from outside of those nations being Porto in 2004, the price on a triumph by a team from outside any of the five major countries is +1600.

Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid while Chelsea defeated Arsenal in Baku in the Europa League.

The re-assertion of English strength was illustrated last season by the fact that all four European finalists were from the EPL.

Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final while Chelsea defeated Arsenal  in the Europa League.

Now Manchester City are favorites to win at +350 with Bovada.

UCL Winners By Nationality 2010-2019

Year Winner Nationality
2019 Liverpool England
2018 Real Madrid Spain
2017 Real Madrid Spain
2016 Real Madrid Spain
2015 Barcelona Spain
2014 Real Madrid Spain
2013 Bayern Munich Germany
2012 Chelsea England
2011 Barcelona Spain
2010 Inter Milan Italy

Coach Pep Guardiola has spent lavishly on Joao Cancelo and Rodri to iron out the defensive frailties which have prevented City progressing beyond the last eight during his three-season spell in charge.

Threat of Expulsion for Pep

However, there is a threat that City could be expelled from the competition as the governing body UEFA investigates alleged financial irregularities – although the timing is unclear. The club emphatically deny the claims.

Barcelona have not won since 2015 but are favored second at +500.

They have been strengthened by the arrival of French World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann and impressive Dutch midfielder Frenkie De Jong – with Neymar possibly returning to the Camp Nou, too.

Then its Liverpool at +650 and Real Madrid at +800.

Ahead of England’s European “Double,” last season, Spain’s La Liga had delivered both Champions League and Europa League winners in four of the previous six campaigns.

The dominance of Spanish and English clubs across European competition is also underlined by the fact that no other nation has delivered a winner of the Europa League since Porto’s success in 2011.

Ahead of England’s European “Double” last season, Spain’s La Liga had delivered both Champions League and Europa League winners in four of the previous six campaigns.

Liverpool’s priority this season will surely be to win a first English league title in 30 years.

But that is still unlikely to allow any side from outside of England or Spain to take the huge UCL trophy elsewhere.

Zidane Spending Spree

Real Madrid – who won in 2014, 2016, 2017and 2018 – have also spent extravagantly under coach Zinedine Zidane on new signings such as Eden Hazard and Luka Jovic in attempt to re-establish their dominance.

Paris St Germain are Bovada’s fifth favorites to win the UCL at +900.

But they have failed to get beyond the last 16 in each of the past three seasons and will suffer the same fate this time.

Juventus were beaten finalists in 2015 and 2017. After spending over $92 million to add Dutch centre-back Mattijs De Ligt to a squad including Cristiano Ronaldo, and recruiting coach Mauricio Sarri from Chelsea, they are pegged sixth at +1000 with Bovada. However, they are simply not strong enough.

The Bavarian giants were semifinalists in 2018 but were swept aside by Liverpool in the last 16 last season.

Bayern Munich’s major summer signing was to land centre-back Lucas Hernandez from Atletico Madrid for £72 million.

The Bavarian giants were semifinalists in 2018 but were swept aside by Liverpool in the last 16 last season. They are +1200 this season.

Pick: Spain (+240)
