Jerwin Ancajas vs Jonathan Rodriguez Odds & Picks

  • Ancajas vs Rodriguez goes Saturday, November 2nd, at 10 PM ET
  • Ancajas is heavily favored to maintain his grasp on a belt he has held for over three years
  • Can Rodriguez impress in his first professional fight on American soil?

The super flyweight title bout between Jerwin Ancajas vs Jonathan Rodriguez is slated for Nov. 2nd (10 PM ET) at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

With Canelo Alvarez vs Sergey Kovalev taking place on the same night, this fight is flying under the radar for the casual fan. Hardcore aficionados of the sweet science know they’re in for a treat with this one, though.

Ancajas has a chance to emerge from his eighth bout as a reigning champion but Rodriguez can also shake up the hierarchy of the super flyweight division. Check out the fight odds and my analysis of the bout below.

Ancajas vs Rodriguez Odds

Fighter Odds at Bovada
Jerwin Ancajas -1000
Jonathan Rodriguez +600

Odds taken Oct. 30

Ancajas captured IBF gold in September 2016. He has held onto the hardware since, defending seven straight times. Rodriguez only has one career loss and has certainly shown more than a modicum of skill. The question becomes, how should bettors expect him to perform against top-level competition in the absence of having any footage of him against that caliber of opposition.

Rodriguez has a respectable KO rate and over twenty pro fights, so he’s certainly not just some warm body. But Ancajas is on another level and there’s a reason he’s the longest-reigning current champion in his division.

Ancajas stays seated on his throne

This bout pits a 27-year-old champion just shy of entering his competitive peak against a hungry 24-year-old contender who’s eager to prove himself. For Rodriguez, he has competed solely on the Mexican circuit ahead of this fight. It will be interesting to see how he’ll perform when he has his inaugural fight on an American stage.

Ancajas is on the heels of a sixth-round stoppage victory over Ryuichi Funai in May of this year. He has scored some solid highlight-reel stoppages over the years and will assuredly be looking to add another this weekend.

Rodriguez also brings momentum into this fight with a stoppage of his own in his last fight. He defeated forty-plus-fight veteran Felipe Orucuta in June of this year.

Style-wise, Ancajas brings an interesting dynamic to his game by being a southpaw. This will present some difficulties for Rodriguez as far as closing the distance, proper footwork, and figuring out what angles to take.

Rodriguez will bring a hard-charging style with unwavering forward pressure. Ancajas would be wise to stay mobile and show a certain shot economy. He’ll need to pick his shots carefully and not go for entries willy nilly.

Ancajas vs Rodriguez Tale of the Tape

Once the bell rings, I can see Rodriguez having some moments throughout the bout. But I see that success being fleeting. Ancajas will have more sustained, noticeable periods of control. I predict a unanimous-decision win.

Pick: Ancajas (-1000)
