Odds of the Patriots and Niners Meeting in Super Bowl 54 with 18-0 Records Set at +4000

  • Patriots and 49ers have not yet lost heading into Week 9
  • Patriots were 18-0 in 2007 before losing to Giants in the Super Bowl
  • Read below to see if wagering on an all-undefeated Super Bowl matchup is worth betting

There is a lot of football left to play in the NFL season, but for the time being, there’s a dream scenario that’s in the early infant stages: a Super Bowl matchup of undefeated teams.

Bovada is turning that fantasy into a betting reality, with odds on Super Bowl 54 pitting the San Francisco 49ers against the New England Patriots – with both teams 18-0 – in an undefeated winner-take-all title tilt.

49ers vs Patriots Both 18-0 Super Bowl Matchup Odds

Will the 49ers and Patriots be 18-0 and Play Each Other in the Super Bowl? Odds at Bovada
Yes +4000
No -10000

*Odds taken October 31

For the record, the 1972 Dolphins are the only NFL team to go undefeated in the regular season, and run the playoff table for a Super Bowl title. Let’s delve into the possibility and see if it’s worth making a ‘yes’ bet.

Going Undefeated in the NFL is Nearly Impossible

Other than the Dolphins, there are only three other teams in NFL history to go undefeated in the regular season: the 1934 and 1942 Chicago Bears and the 2007 Patriots, who finished 18-1 after losing to the Giants in the Super Bowl. And that’s it.

That the Patriots are en route to an undefeated season a dozen years after they turned the trick is amazing in itself, with the only mainstays being owner Robert Kraft, head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. Oddsmakers had already been buzzing about New England’s chances of running the regular season table, currently sitting at a realistic +280.

And for a franchise as decorated as the 49ers, they’re searching for their first unbeaten regular season and they’re enjoying their best start to a year since 1990, when they started out 10-0.

Bovada certainly thinks this weird season could get even weirder: they have the Patriots at +650 and the 49ers at +700 to go 18-0 en route to a Super Bowl berth.

Legitimate Competition Awaits

Much has been made of New England’s historic-level defense to start out 8-0, but it has been against a mostly cream puff schedule of pivots. Starting in Week 9, they’ll go through their murderer’s row. It’s a five-game run that goes: at Baltimore and Philly, home for the Cowboys, at the Texans and hosting the Chiefs. There’s no Sam Darnold or Ryan Fitzpatrick in the bunch.

If their defense can contain Lamar Jackson, Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott, Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes, all that’s left between them and a perfect regular season is Cincinnati, Buffalo and Miami.

It will be a tougher time out West, as the 7-0 Niners will get the Cardinals Thursday night followed by the first of two with Seattle in the second half of the year, and the Cardinals again. But try coming down the home stretch to this: Packers, at Ravens, at Saints, home to Falcons, before closing it out against the Rams and then at Seattle.

Forget trap games or even sheer luck – if New England and San Francisco make it out of the regular season unscathed, they’ll have earned it.

Is There any Reason to Bet this Perfect Super Bowl Pairing?

I think New England is right where they should be, with an historic defense and an offense that will soon heat up. Even with their tough slate, they will still be favored in almost all of those matchups. I’m less sure of the 49ers keeping the pace, though watching the devastating brilliance of Nick Bosa on defense and a punishing ground game that eats up yards, they’re built to stay in every game they play.

I’m all for a good story – even one that could potentially place New England in another stratosphere of football lore – but there are some incredible hurdles both teams will have to climb to even make this a realistic bet. At this point in the year, these odds should be double the current 40-1 to even consider placing a yes wager. There’s too many ways to take an L, and not playing well isn’t even the top of the list.
