Warriors Championship Odds Plummet to +5000 After Curry Breaks Hand

  • Two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry is lost to the Golden State Warriors after suffering a broken hand in Wednesday’s 121-110 loss to the Phoenix Suns
  • Bovada increased Golden State’s 2019-20 NBA Championship odds to +6000
  • The Warriors opened the season at odds of +1400 to win the title

There’s a twisted irony to waking up Halloween morning and awaiting word on just how badly the left hand of Golden State Warriors six-time NBA All-Star guard Steph Curry is broken.

Things were already looking frightful for the Warriors but this is so much worse.

Welcome to their nightmare.

Curry fell awkwardly and broke his hand during Wednesday’s 121-110 loss to the Phoenix Suns, as the Warriors dropped to 1-3 on the season.

How the mighty Warriors have fallen. And they won’t get up.

Bovada immediately lengthened Golden State to +5000 in the sportsbook’s 2019-20 NBA Championship odds.

2020 NBA Championship Odds

Team Odds at Bovada
Los Angeles Clippers +300
Los Angeles Lakers +300
Milwaukee Bucks +525

Brooklyn Nets +2800

Indiana Pacers +5000

Odds taken on October 31st

The Warriors’ odds of winning the 2019-20 NBA title were at +1400 when the season began.

Curry, Warriors Await Fate

Curry, who suffered the injury during the aftermath of a hard collision under the hoop with Phoenix’s Aron Baynes, intends to undergo an MRI and a CT scan. Those tests will determine if surgery is required. Should that be the case, he could be out for a very long time.

The Warriors are already without All-Star guard Klay Thompson for much of this season following offseason knee surgery. Two other members of last season’s starting five, forward Kevin Durant and center DeMarcus (Boogie) Cousins departed during the summer.

Suddenly, the team that posted an NBA Western Conference-leading 57 wins and went to the NBA Finals for the fifth season in a row is down to Draymond Green and a bunch of scrubs going against a deep and talented group of Western clubs.

It’s a Players’ League

No team sport compares to the NBA in terms of the vitality that one player brings to the floor for a team. Just look at the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland went to the NBA Finals four years in a row with LeBron James leading the way.

Last season, when James bolted to the Los Angeles Lakers via free agency, the Cavs dropped to 14th overall in the Eastern Conference at 14-63.

Curry is the straw that stirs the drink for Golden State. During last spring’s NBA Finals loss to Toronto, it was Curry’s heroic play that kept the injury-ravaged Warriors in with the chance to beat the Raptors.

The current roster doesn’t have the depth of talent to offset the loss of Curry for any significant length of time.

Playoffs? Are We Talking Playoffs?

The Warriors and their supporters scoffed at offseason speculation that they might be hard-pressed to make the playoffs this season in a rugged Western Confernece.

No one is scoffing any more.

After the game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr acknowledged that his team is in a tough spot. He’ll have no choice but to throw his young roster into the frying pan, as he put it.

D’Angelo Russell and prospects like Jordan Poole, Damion Lee and Eric Paschall will now play vital roles. It’s quite the come down from last season’s starting five featuring four NBA All-Stars, three MVP awards and five scoring titles.

This is their worst start to a season since 2009-10, when Golden State opened 1-4.

The Suns set upon the Warriors relentlessly on Wednesday. When Curry’s hand snapped, it’s fair to say that the sun set on the Warriors’ dynasty.
