Odds of Jason Garrett Not Being Coach of Cowboys in 2020 Moves to -1000 After Thanksgiving Loss

The #FireGarrett hashtag was trending in full force on Thanksgiving Day, shortly after the Dallas Cowboys dropped their holiday meeting against the Buffalo Bills.

Following back-to-back losses for the Cowboys, the pressure is on for head coach Jason Garrett, with just four games remaining in the season.

BetOnline released odds on whether Garrett will be the head coach of the Cowboys in Week 1 of the NFL season in 2020, with No coming in as the overwhelming -1000 favorite.

Prior to their Week 13 game against the Bills, the odds of Garrett not returning to coach the Cowboys in Week 1 of the 2020 season were set at +500.

However, the line moved to -1000 after Dallas dropped a 26-15 decision to the Bills. The loss was also Dallas’ third in their last four games, but the Cowboys are now 6-6 and still sit first in a weak NFC East Division.

Any Chance Garrett Keeps His Job?

BetOnline had the odds of Garrett keeping his job into next season set at +300 prior to the Thanksgiving game.

Those odds lengthened to +500 heading into Week 14, as the Cowboys prepare to take on the Bears next Sunday.

There is always a defining moment that costs a struggling head coach a job. Is the loss against the Bills that moment for Garrett?

The Cowboys started the game on the right foot, scoring the first TD on their opening drive. However, it was all downhill from there as Bills receiver Cole Beasley came back to haunt his former team with six receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown.

Perhaps one of the biggest disappointments in the game was Cowboys’ running back Ezekiel Elliott being held to just 71 yards rushing without a touchdown.

Jones Sticking by Garrett . . . For Now

Garrett is currently in his ninth season as head coach of the Cowboys, leading the team to a respectable 83-65 regular-season record. Dallas is 2-3 in playoff games under Garrett.

Big picture, Garrett has turned Dallas into a playoff contender during his tenure. But his lack of getting the Cowboys to a Super Bowl have many people wondering if Garrett is the right man for the job.

Ask team owner Jerry Jones and the answer is yes . . . for now, that is.

“This is not the time for me (to make a coaching change),” Jones told reporters following Thursday’s loss. “I’m looking ahead at winning four or five straight and helping write a story they will talk about, how it looks like you’re down and out.”

Take Jones’ recent remarks as a vote of confidence as Dallas looks to salvage what started out as a solid season. This is the same Cowboys team that started the season with three wins, but then followed it with three straight defeats.

 

Cowboys Face Tough Schedule Down the Stretch

Take Washington out of the equation — that is a team the Cowboys can beat. But Dallas faces three other teams fighting for a playoff spot down the stretch — the Chicago Bears next week, followed by the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams.

If Garrett can lead the Cowboys to a playoff spot and even win a game or two, chances he returns to coach in Week 1 of 2020 will improve drastically.

But Garrett will likely face reality if the Cowboys fall short. Don’t count on him being back for Week 1 next season.
