On This Day in Sports – April 1st

They say we should use this time to learn something new – so we thought we’d offer up a history lesson free of charge!

We’re going to be recapping all the important sporting moments each and every day as we look to fill the void our beloved sports and teams have left behind.

So if it’s basketball, cricket, golf or even wrestling, be sure to return each and every morning as we take a trip back through the history books to relive some of sports‘ greatest moments.

1973 – John Havlicek

Havlicek was an eight-time NBA champion and crowned Finals MVP in 1974, but he only put up 50-points in a playoff game once.

Against the Hawks in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, Havlicek scored a career-high 54-points to help the Celtics defeat Atlanta 134-109. He also hit 24 of his 36 field goal attempts – an NBA playoff record.

1981 – From Good to Great

It was on this day in 1981 Wayne Gretzky broke Bobby Orr’s 10-year record for most assists in a single NHL season. The man affectionately known as ‘The Great One’ had nine seasons of 100 assists or more.

1984 – Fred Leaves Em’ Dead

A babyfaced, 24-year-old Fred Couples won the PLAYERS Championship on this day in 1984 by a stroke over Lee Trevino. Couples went on to win the PLAYERS for a second time in 1996 and has been providing us with many memorable moments at the famous 17th hole for the last three decades.

1992 – Justin Time

Justin Langer scored 149 runs on this day in 1992 to lead Western Australia to a 44 run victory over New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield Final in Perth. Mike Whitney was also enormous in the second innings taking seven wickets for NSW.

1995 – The Best 12 Seconds of Chris Sutton’s Life

Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton once owned the record for the fastest goal in English Premier League history when he scored 12.94 seconds into a match against Everton.

That record was eventually broken a year later by Aston Villa striker Dwight Yorke, but since Blackburn fans don’t have a whole lot to get excited about these days, you can relieve some of his best goals above.

2007 – Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps not only broke his own world record in the 400m medley on this day in 2007, he also won his seventh gold medal at the World Championships in Melbourne.

2016 – The Streak

The Warriors dynasty was in full stride in 2016, but in a sign of things to come, Golden State’s home winning record of 54 games came to an end at the hands of the Celtics in a 109-106 defeat.

Of course, the Dubs went on to lose a famous Finals series to LeBron James and the Cavs after leading 3-1.
