Race 1 - 12:53pm
All but one of the confirmed starters in Race 1 is on debut and there is simply too much that can happen, in my opinion. I’m happy to stay out and wait for the second.

Miss Frost will take winning form into Race 2 at Ascot on Saturday and can make it two in a row. The four-year-old daughter of Frost Giant returned from an eighteen-month absence to win with utter ease just over a week ago and she’ll only improve for that effort. She looked to be a talented filly during her debut preparation, and she has clearly not lost that talent, despite the long lay-off.

The conditions of this race look as though they’ll suit Double Jeopardy, particularly with the benefit of a claiming apprentice in the saddle. The Exceed And Excel gelding didn’t show a lot through three starts last preparation, but mustered a nice turn of foot to finish second here when resuming. He’s had several weeks between runs, will improve for that effort and is drawn to receive a lovely run from barrier 3.

Blackwater Bay has continued to improve with racing since resuming this time and strikes another very winnable contest on Northam Stakes Day. The Adam Durrant-trained gelding needed the hit-out when he failed to find another gear at Pinjarra first-up but has since finished second over 1500m and broken his maiden at this track and trip. This is harder, but it does look the next logical step, and he’ll have the benefit of William Pike in the saddle.

Dark Choice saluted for us at a lovely price a few weeks ago and I don’t see why we should jump off ahead of her fourth-up assignment. The Grant & Alana Williams-trained mare won last year’s WA Oaks and finished midfield in the Derby before going for a decent spell, and while she did need her first two runs to find form this time, her last performance was outstanding. She’s fitter fourth-up and will get some relief in the weights with Chris Graham’s claim.

Only six horses will step out in this year’s Northam Stakes, but the depth of talent confirmed means that it is shaping as a terrific betting race.
There is no doubt that odds-on favourite Fabergino is the one to beat, but I’m happy to take him on at the short quote and I think that Flirtini is the horse to do the job. The Artie Schiller mare recorded some lovely wins last time in, including both the Group 3 Prince Of Wales and the Group 3 Colonel Reeves. There was a lot to like about her resuming run for third in the Charleson Sprint here three weeks ago and she is a horse that typically enjoys big improvement with a run under her belt.

This is another excellent and open race, but I am more than happy to stick with last-start winner and form east coaster, Condor Heroes. It is fair to say that he has been a bit of a headcase throughout his racing career, but he has always hinted at above-average talent and a move west and into the care of Chris Gangemi appears to have worked. His debut run for the stable at around $9 was excellent, and any improvement would find him hard to beat again.

She’s stepping out of mares’ company, but this also looks something of a drop in class for Festival Miss and she looms as a live chance of a return to winning form. The Bernardini mare ran fourth in a decent contest two back before finishing a length off Angelic Ruler in the Listed Sheila Gwynne Classic last week. She’s rock-hard fit and needs only even luck to be fighting out the finish again.

Race 9 - 6:05pm
This looms as one of the, if not the most open race on Saturday’s card at Ascot and there is a case to be made for several finding their way into the winner’s stall.
She’s Alight was caught wide here at Ascot last time out, but produced an extremely tough effort to win and I am happy to be with her again. The Tavistock mare has been up and racing since the start of the year, but she has clearly continued to find and getting out to a mile at this point of her prep looks ideal

Massimo will take good improvement into his second campaign start and is primed to win. The Sessions gelding could hardly have been more impressive last time in and resumed this time with a competitive effort to finish fourth over 1000m, just over a length from the winner. I think he’ll improve by more than that margin into this contest.
