On This Day: June 1

They say we should use this time to learn something new – so we thought we’d offer up a history lesson free of charge!

We’re going to be recapping all the important sporting moments each and every day as we look to fill the void our beloved sports have left behind.

So if it’s AFL, NRL, Basketball, Cricket, Golf or even Wrestling, be sure to return each morning as we take a trip back through the history books to relive some of the great sporting moments On This Day.

2016 – Queensland Wins Game 1 of Origin

80,251 people were on hand at ANZ Stadium to witness Queensland kick-off their 2016 Origin campaign with a 6-4 win against the Blues on this day four years ago.

The match was a grind and the end result left a sour-taste in NSW Blues players and coaches at the end of it.

A call to overturn an on-field decision and deny Josh Morris a try for New South Wales left the Blues camp filthy.

In his post-match press conference, Blues coach Laurie Daley didn’t hide how he really felt.

He called for referees Gerard Sutton and Ben Cummins to be removed for the second match.

Somehow, it wouldn’t be the last time referee Ben Cummins would be involved in a controversial call on Rugby Leauge’s biggest stage.

1985 – Around The Grounds

YouTube never fails to deliver.

The channel, Jaroosa is becoming the Robelinda2 version for AFL fans with an absolute treasure trove of rare-archival stuff that hasn’t seen the light of day until now.

One of the clips is now 35 years old today which is the half-time summary from VFL Round 10, 1985 of Channel 7 Brisbane’s live telecast of the Carlton v Hawthorn match from Princes Park.

We go back to the studio with hosts Ken Hose and Ken Burgoyne for an update from Around the Grounds of the other VFL matches being played that day, the TAA mark of the week and the Fosters goal of the week.

Some awesome prizes are to be won, including a trip for two to Melbourne flying TAA to attend a VFL game!
