Mike Tyson vs Tyson Fury reads like something out of a Hollywood movie. The champion of yesteryear taking on the uber dominant present-day champion. This fight seemed like a purely fantasy-based matchup only a few weeks ago.

Now it seems to be picking up some steam on social media. Tyson Fury’s father was a huge Iron Mike fan and the present-day WBC/ lineal champion is the namesake of both John Fury and Mike Tyson. The myriad of storytelling tendrils that protrude from this proposed dream fight is truly astonishing.

When Iron Mike started releasing his comeback videos, many possible opponents popped up. Oddsmakers theorized many individuals early on but the lineal and WBC heavyweight champion was not thought of until recently. In fact, Tyson is not even the first member of the Fury family to call out the retired heavyweight great. The aforementioned father, John Fury posted a video earlier in the month calling out Mike Tyson. A battle between two pugilists in their 50’s.

The younger Fury revealed in a recent interview with BT Sport that he received a phone call for a tilt with Mike Tyson. A fight that he enthusiastically responded “Hell yeah!” to.

Mike Tyson has not personally indicated if he is aiming for this fight on his comeback trail. Though Tyson Fury did indicate that nothing has seemed to materialize beyond that point with the proposed exhibition fight. The Gypsy King is on top of the world and has no shortage of options for when he returns to the ring. Then again, Mike Tyson has quite a few options too.

A Video Game Simulation Come To Life…?

Tyson Fury being slated as a massive favorite in this prospective fight is appropriate. While an older champion coming back to unseat a reigning titlist is not unprecedented (ex: George Foreman regaining the heavyweight championship of the world again).

Still though, there are far more examples of the young champion drubbing the titlist of a previous generation (ex: Ali losing to Holmes, Holmes losing to Tyson, etc). The realities of life/ the objectivity of human biochemistry do not lead me to think this contest would be competitive at all. Evidently not everyone shares that perception though.

The two have a very obvious level of mutual respect. Fury was on Tyson’s podcast (Hotboxin’ Ep 47) and the two clearly had quite a rapport with each other. Considering all of the aforementioned factors, I could see Fury treating this like a sparring match. The immeasurable respect that the reigning heavyweight king must have for Mike Tyson leads me to believe this. Fury would operate within a certain gear and not aim to blitz the returning lion a la Fury’s Wilder rematch.

Unfortunately, life is not a movie and the sweet science has all too often showcased the story of yesteryear’s king falling to the modern conquerer. I would wait for this fight to be made official before allocating any money towards betting on this prizefight. If this ever ends up getting booked though, I have Fury all day.
