Royal Randwick Preview – Saturday 4th July

There is no black type racing in Sydney this weekend, but a strong nine-race card will take place at Royal Randwick.

The rail will be set out four metres around the entire course and inclement weather has led to the track being rated in the heavy range.

Race 1 - 11:35am

Newhaven Park Handicap (1300m)

Tejori has been racing well this preparation and looms as a winning chance in the first, at a nice price ($9 at publish).

The Hinchinbrook filly recorded consecutive wins at Canberra and in a Highway race here at Randwick when resuming.

She finished a length and a half fifth two back and mustered a nice turn of foot late to fill the minors over 1200m last time out.

The small rise in trip should suit and I like that Nick Olive is mixing things up a little with her.

Race 2 - 12:10pm

Highway Handicap (1000m)

This is a particularly open Highway race and there’s a case to be made for many of these country sprinters.

Bad Boy For Love will need to overcome the potentially sticky barrier 12, but he has been racing well and looks a winning chance again ($9 at publish).

The Wanted gelding has flown home to place at his last two, including a credible second behind Partners here last time out.

Race 3 - 12:45pm

Grunt Standing At Yulong Handicap (1100m)

Tailleur hasn’t been seen at the races since January, but she is clearly a horse of ability and can make a winning return on Saturday.

The Shooting To Win filly has made just the one appearance competitively, but absolutely dominated her rivals on the way to a four-length win at Gosford.

She’s had the benefit of a couple of trials leading into this and looks ready to go.

Race 4 - 1:20pm

Quincy Seltzer Handicap (1800m)

Matowi has stripped fitter for two fair efforts this time and is ready to do something third-up at Randwick on Saturday.

The Ocean Park gelding was a strong and consistent performer last time in and has so far finished fifth in the Octagonal Handicap and a BM88 race at Rosehill this campaign.

Fitter third-up and with James McDonald aboard, he is primed to strike.

Race 5 - 1:55pm

Ranvet Handicap (1000m)

Lashes was scratched from a race in Brisbane last week and looks the one to beat third-up in Race 5 at Randwick.

The Matt Smith-trained mare returned to the races with a lovely effort to finish second behind the in-form Adelong and wasn’t quite able to get into the contest when fifth last time out.

I am happy to forgive that run, she typically goes well on a rain-affected track and with James McDonald jumping back into the saddle, she’ll certainly take beating.

4 Units Lashes

Race 6 - 2:30pm

Live Vision Handicap (2400m)

Elaborate has returned to the races in slick form this time and will be suited to the conditions of Race 6 at Randwick on Saturday.

The four-year-old son of Excelebration has been up and racing for a while but recorded consecutive wins at Hawkesbury and Newcastle before finishing second in couple of far stronger contests here at Randwick, most recently.

He’s drawn ideally, Nash Rawiller rides and he probably won’t be offered a better opportunity to win on a Saturday.

2 Units Elaborate

Race 7 - 3:10pm

Sky Racing Active Handicap (1400m)

James McDonald has elected to jump off Threeodd in favour of Jay Jay D’ar and I think the horse is ready to win.

The Pins mare races well, albeit in weaker company earlier this preparation and has continued to perform competitively in tougher races recently, including a close-up fourth in a similar race to this, last time out.

McDonald has options from the rails draw and I am happy to have a play at the price.

2 Units E/W Jay Jay D’ar

Race 8 - 3:50pm

Heineken 3 Handicap (1300m)

Rari will enjoy good improvement into his second campaign start and looks well placed to win.

The Greg Hickman-trained gelding was a model of consistency last time in, winning once and finishing second a further five times – running into horses like Subpoenaed and Rubisaki.

He was only a length and a half from Outback Diva when resuming this time and with even luck, he’s going to take a power of beating here.

5 Units Rari

Race 9 - 4:30pm

Drinkwise Mile (1600m)

Mr Dependable has returned to the races in good condition and is another horse that looks ready to win third-up.

The Reliable Man gelding probably just ran out of condition late when fourth behind True Detective first-up and only just missed at this track and distance a fortnight ago.

2 Units Mr Dependable
