North Melbourne got the job done with a 26 point win over the Western Bulldogs at the MCG in Shinboner of the Centruy Glenn Archer’s 300th game.
It was then future 300 gamer Drew Petrie who put on a show for the North Melbourne icon kicking six goals in the space of 20 minutes in the first quarter, ensuring the Roos were going to get up on Archer’s milestone day.
The Kangaroos 17-9 (111) defeated the Western Bulldogs 11-9 (85).
A presentation was held on the ground at the end of the game with a guard of honour formed by both the Roos and the Dogs with North Melbourne Team of The Century and 200 club teammates honouring the club icon.
2001 – Alfie Saves Queensland
July 1, 2001 is a date that is remembered fondly by many Queenslanders as it was the date Allan “Alfie” Langer made his triumphant comeback for the Maroons.
The leadup to Origin Game III focused around Brad Fittler’s pending retirement from rep footy.
Both NSW and QLD were tied up at 1-1 in the series, Wayne Bennett needed something to spur on the Maroons.
Enter – Alfie Langer.
With Queensland skipper Gordon Tallis missing, Bennett took part in secret negotiations with legendary Maroons veteran Allan Langer to bring him back from England to save the day.
Langer was named at number 7.
He tore the Blues a new one with that trademark solo try from close range in the 54th minute which ensured that Queensland would win the series.
