Bonnies Peaking at the Right Time

The Bonnies wrap up their conference schedule on Monday after recording their most dominant win of the season on Friday, an 88-41 rout of the slumping George Washington Colonials. However, it was VCU’s stunning 65-57 loss to Davidson on Saturday night that assured St. Bonaventure’s finish atop the standings, and their first undisputed regular season conference title in program history.

With St. Bonaventure now assured of top seeding and a first-round bye in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, Monday’s contest represents a preview of a potential second-round clash with Dayton, which currently sits in eighth place.

Smothering Defense Producing Steady Wins for the UNDER

The Bonnies have played stifling defense during their current 3-0 SU run. In addition to their shutdown performance against the Colonials, the team effectively contain Davidson while posting wins in both halves of a home-and-home this past week. Overall, Bona has limited opponents to fewer than 51 points per game. Not surprisingly, the UNDER paid out in totals betting in each of those contests. That extends a lengthy trend favoring the UNDER, which has gone 12-2 in the Bonnies’ past 14 games.

While Kyle Lofton leads the team in scoring, with 14.8 points per game, it has been Jaren Holmes that has been powering the Bonnies offense. The junior guard has led the attack in each of the past three outings, averaging over 17 points per game and recording one double-double.

Flyers Flailing on the Road

The Flyers enter Monday’s contest on the rebound after dropping a 97-84 decision to St. Joseph’s as 8-point road chalk last Wednesday. With the loss, Dayton has now gone 2-4 SU in its past six, including three straight losses on the road. The Flyers’ current slide comes on the heels of an impressive 5-1 SU run in conference play, which featured convincing outright victories over Davidson and Saint Louis as heavy road underdogs.

However, the Flyers have struggled to contain opposing shooters of late, allowing an average of 94 points over their two most recent road defeats. The upside for Dayton has been its steady performance on offense. The club has scored 83 points per game over their past three, and have seen the OVER pay out in five of six contests.

Overcoming Historic Slide a Daunting Task for Dayton

The Flyers’ recently struggles have not dampen the performance of Jalen Crutcher. The team leader in points, assists, and steals, Crutcher has tallied 19ppg over the past three contests, and topped 20 points on nine occasions this season. The senior guard has also scored in the double-digits in three previous appearances against the Bonnies, capped by last season’s 23-point, seven-assist performance.

However, that has not been enough to snap Dayton’s lengthy run of futility against the Bonnies. The Flyers have posted wins in just two of 21 dates with St. Bonaventure since 2002. That run includes a dismal 9-1 SU in 10 away dates with the Bonnies, with Dayton going winless ATS in their past six.

The Picks: Bonnies -8 (+110); OVER 132.5 (-110)
