Sheffield Struggling

Sheffield has lost his last three starts and has a 9.45 ERA during that span. He lasted 4.1 innings in his previous start against the Colorado Rockies last Wednesday, giving up three runs and four hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

Sheffield has notched just three quality starts in 13 outings this season. The last one came May 15 against Cleveland.

In six starts on the road this season, Sheffield is 1-4 with a 6.39 ERA. His record is 4-4 in eight starts at night, but his ERA is a bloated 6.12.

Sheffield will be making his second career start against the Blue Jays, not factoring in the decision in 2019 when he surrendered three runs in four innings. Toronto second baseman Marcus Semien is 2 for 5 against Sheffield with a home run and four walks.

Semien has hit six home runs in June and shortstop Bo Bichette has posted nine multi-hit games during the month.

Catcher Reese McGuire is hitting .500 (17 for 34) in his last 11 games with five doubles and three RBIs. Designated hitter Teoscar Hernandez has gone 19 for 52 (.365) with seven doubles, three home runs, and 13 RBIs in his last 12 games.

The Blue Jays have scored at least five runs in each of their last five games.

Matz Returns to Active Roster

Matz will be activated from the COVID-19 injured list prior to the game. He has been out since June 13 but threw 60 pitches in a live batting-practice session last Thursday.

In his last seven starts, Matz has gone 3-1 with a 3.82 ERA. He beat the Red Sox in Boston the night before being placed on the IL, allowing one run on four hits in 5.2 innings while striking out eight and walking two.

Matz has four quality starts this season in 13 games. However, he has only one in his last 10 turns after starting the year with three in a row.

This will be the first time Matz has faced the Mariners in his career and just his second start at Sahlen Field. He took a loss to the Houston Astros on June 6 when he yielded four runs in 4.1 innings. Matz is 4-2 with a 4.94 ERA in nine nighttime starts in 2021.

The Mariners have scored three runs or fewer in four of their last six games. However, shortstop JP Crawford is hitting .343 (35 for 102) in June with 15 runs, nine doubles, three home runs, 14 RBIs, 10 walks, and two stolen bases in 25 games.

About Last Night

On Tuesday night, Semien homered and drove in five runs and Bichette hit a three-run homer to lead the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays had 15 hits — with all nine starters getting at least one. Semien had three hits, including a three-run homer in the seventh inning. He also had a two-run double.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr had two hits. The Blue Jays also got two hits apiece from Hernandez, Lourdes Gurriel Jr, and Bichette.

Ty France hit a tying three-run homer in the sixth for the Mariners.

Long Time No See

Tuesday night marked the first time the Blue Jays and Mariners met since 2019. The Mariners won the season series 4-2 that year.

Bichette has given the Mariners major problems, notching multiple hits in five of his seven career games against them. He is 12 for 32 (.375) with two doubles, three homers, and seven RBIs.

Look for Bichette and the rest of the Blue Jays lineup to feast on the struggling Sheffield in this one.

The Pick: Blue Jays -1.5 (-112)
