US Open Men’s Singles Second Round Odds & Picks – Day 3 (Sept 1)

  • The top seeds in action – Medvedev, Tsitsipas and Rublev – are all heavy favorites Wednesday
  • The remnants of Hurricane Ida are expected to hit, likely limiting the action to the two roofed stadiums
  • We break down those top matches and look for value

The forecast for Flushing Meadows on Wednesday is for cats and dogs – the remnants of Hurricane Ida coming through.

And it’s actually getting worse (in terms of rainfall) the closer we get.

But because of the roofs on Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong Stadiums, there will be tennis.

We look at some of the matches that are guaranteed to go on below and make some predictions.

Kevin Anderson vs Diego Schwartzman Prediction

It’s a David-and-Goliath type of matchup, the kind the 5-7 Schwartzman is used to by now.

But Anderson has had the upper hand. Even the one match Schwartzman won, he had to come back from losing the first two sets.

A 35-year-old South African, Anderson has had injury woes in the last few years. But he finally has gotten his ranking back into the top 100 and is starting to play like a reasonable facsimile of his former top-10, Wimbledon finalist self.

But he also had a brutal first round – a four-hour, 22-minute, five-set victory over big-serving Czech lefty Jiri Vesely in hot and humid conditions.

Meanwhile, Schwartzman posted a straight-sets victory over Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania.

Kevin Anderson vs Diego Schwartzman Match History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2018 French Open (R16) Outdoor Clay 1-6, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (0), 6-2 Schwartzman
2016 Nice (R16) Outdoor Clay 7-6 (4), 6-3 Anderson
2015 Australian Open (R128) Outdoor Hard 7-6 (5), 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 Anderson

Still, the courts are playing fast. And the likely conditions indoors mean Anderson’s serve will be firing even more.

Best Bet: Anderson in an upset (+195)

Frances Tiafoe vs Guido Pella Prediction

Even though he’s unseeded, Tiafoe’s nationality and star power got him a coveted stadium court assignment Wednesday.

Down to No. 85 in the rankings, 31-year-old Argentine Pella was at a career-high No. 20 just two years ago, right at this time of the year.

The two have never played each other.

Pella showed some signs of life in Cincinnati, where he defeated a rusty David Goffin, and then Fabio Fognini in the first two rounds. But he also has lost in the first round in 11 of the 15 tournaments he’s played this year.

The crowd is likely to be even bigger than usual on Louis Armstrong Stadium, with the likelihood of no play on the outside courts. That’s right up Tiafoe’s alley: showtime.

Best Bet: Tiafoe in straight sets (+250)

Adrian Mannarino vs Stefanos Tsitsipas Prediction

Tsitsipas and Adrian Mannarino are 1-1. But Mannarino’s victory came when Tsitsipas retired because of injury, down 6-3, 5-7, at a tournament in Zhuhai, China back in 2019.

Tsitsipas will have to pull up well from a long, dramatic five-setter against Andy Murray in the first round on Monday.

Mannarino hadn’t played since he was forced to retire with what looked like a bad knee injury against Roger Federer at Wimbledon. But the rehab must have gone well.

He’s entered in singles and doubles.  And in the first round, he got past countryman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in five sets – after losing the first two.

That might well be all he has left in the tank. But as crafty as he is, he might sneak out a set.

Best Bet: Tsitsipas in four sets (+280)
