Eight Is Enough for Collins

Talk about crazy eights. For Collins reaching the final eight in Chicago is her eighth appearance of the season in a tournament quarterfinal round.

American Collins, the #10 seed, got there by dispatching #7 seed and world #18 Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-4. Falling behind 2-1 in the first set, Collins unleashed a run that saw her win seven consecutive games.

She was able to break Mertens’ service seven times on 13 opportunities. Mertens helped her opponent’s cause. The Belgian player double-faulted seven times in the first set and 10 times during the match. Mertens only managed to successfully land 45% of his first serves into play during the first set.

Collins credits the turnaround in her game this year to January surgery she underwent to treat endometriosis. It’s a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the womb starts to grow in other places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Collins indicated the pain that this was causing her was debilitating. It prevented her from playing her best tennis.

She was sitting #50 in the world rankings at the time Collins made the decision to undergo the operation. Today, she is 28th in the WTA rankings.

Vondrousova Completes Olympic Set

Chicago once made a failed bit for the Summer Olympic Games. Well, Chicagoans at least are getting plenty of looks at all three Olympic women’s tennis medal-winners for this past summer’s Tokyo Games.

Elina Svitolina, the #1 seed in Chicago, won Olympic bronze. She’s in the quarterfinals. Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, the Olympic gold medalist, also advanced to the final eight.

Vondrousova, who settled for the silver medal after losing the Tokyo final to Bencic, completed the Olympic medal set when she bounced #16 seed Jil Teichmann, 6-4, 6-3. Vondrousova only required an hour and 19 minutes to complete her mission.

It was the second successive round in which Vondrousova stopped a seeded player. She ousted #4 seed Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 32. The Czech player has yet to drop a set in Chicago. Vondrousova hasn’t lost more than four games in any set during the tournament.

First Meeting for Collins-Vondrousova

There’s a first time for everything and this will be the first tennis match between Vondrousova and Collins. Since her Olympic final appearance, Vondrousova has also reached a semifinal and two quarterfinals. At the same time, she’s gone out once each in the first and second rounds of events.

Vondrousova started the season 10-8. However, the 2019 French Open finalist appears to have rediscovered her form since this year’s tourney at Roland Garros. Vondrousova is 19-8 since that event. She’s gone 9-5 against top 50 players and an even better 4-2 when facing top 20 opponents.
