NFL Odds and Spreads – Line Movement for Week 4

  • Week 4 of the NFL season got underway with Thursday’s Cincinnati Bengals-Jacksonville Jaguars game
  • Which betting line has moved the most since opening? What’s the smallest spread of the week?
  • All of the wagering information on every NFL game is listed below

All eyes in the NFL will be on one game this week.

For most of his NFL career, Tom Brady leading the reigning Super Bowl champions out on the field at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro as seven-point favorites would’ve been considered business as usual. This time, though, TB12 is coming back to New England to face his old club, the Patriots, on Sunday Night Football at the helm of the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

How will the Pats’ faithful react if Brady throws for five TDs and routs their heroes? That’s kind of like Santa Claus coming down the chimney and taking all the presents out from under the Christmas tree.

As much as there will fascination with the goings on in Foxboro, that game doesn’t make the cut as one of the movers or shakers in NFL Week 4 line movement.

Let’s look at which games did earn one of those spots. First, though, check out the latest NFL odds for Week 4.

We’re Not Lion – Detroit Is A Good Bet

In 1970, the Detroit Lions kicked a late field goal to take a 17-16 lead over the New Orleans Saints. On the final play of the game, Saints kicker Tom Dempsey booted an NFL-record 63-yard field goal to give the Saints a 19-17 victory.

Last Sunday, the Lions kicked a late field goal in the fourth quarter to take a 17-16 lead over the Baltimore Ravens. On the final play of the game, Baltimore’s Justin Tucker booted an NFL-record 66-yard field to give the Ravens a 19-17 victory.

Really. Go ahead. Do your own research. You’ll find out it’s true.

NFL bettors have also been doing their own research. You know what they’ve found out? Detroit is a good betting team.

The 0-3 Lions are 2-1 against the spread in 2021. They covered at +7.5 against Ravens. In Week 1, they covered at +9.5 against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Bears aren’t anywhere near as good as either of those teams and the line opened Chicago -6. It’s since shortened to Bears -3.

Fields Of Nightmares

The Lions-Bears tilt also wins the Week 4 title for the most movement in the total. All those Bears who wished for Justin Fields to be their quarterback? Be careful what you wish for.

In his first start against the Cleveland Browns, Fields threw for 68 yards – just two yards longer than Tucker’s game-winning field goal against the Lions.

This game is featuring the No. 31 (Chicago) and No. 22 (Detroit) scoring offenses in the NFL. Add it all up and it caused the total to shrink from 46.0 to 42.5.

Perfect Broncos

The Denver Broncos are one of three NFL teams that are still perfect against the spread this season at 3-0. The only way to keep that streak alive this week will be to win outright at home against the Baltimore Ravens.

This game opened with Denver as a 1.5-point favorite. Today, Baltimore is the 1-point chalk, making it the smallest spread of the week.

Houston Has A Problem

Rookie Davis Mills will be under center for the Houston Texans in Buffalo to face the Bills and oddsmakers are anticipating that things are going to get very ugly.

The Bills are massive 17.5-point favorites. That’s two TDs, a field goal and then some. Buffalo has outscored its opponents 78-21 over the past two weeks.

Hey, but even if the Bills cover, it still won’t be the worst day a Houston NFL team has ever endured in Buffalo. Find an old Houston Oilers fan and ask them about Frank Reich and the 1992 AFC Wild Card Game.

Keeping The Joneses Down

Last week, the New Orleans Saints took care of the Patriots and QB Mac Jones. This week, in their first home game in front of fans since 2019, they get to dine on QB Daniel Jones and the New York Giants.

Of course, the Saints have Jameis Winston under center. He can be sensational, or he can be much less than that.

The total on this game opened at 43.5. It’s since shrunk to 41.5. That’s barely over the total on Daniel Jones fumbles.

Really. The guy’s lost the football 30 times in 32 NFL games. Butterfingers much?

Big Plays, Big Numbers

Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams has thrown for nine TDs this season, Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals has tossed seven passes for scores. Murray has also run it in three times.

The Rams-Cardinals game earns a share of the largest total this week at 54.5 points. It’s grown from 53.5.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are also at 54.5 points. That game was at 55. It shortened because while the Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes and his nine TD passes, the Eagles have Jalen Hurts.
