2021 Melbourne Cup Internationals Preview

Four of the last five Melbourne Cup winners have been internationally trained and nine of the last 11 have been Internationally bred.

We will not see as many horses making the trek this year because of the state of the world at the moment but they always add a lot of intrigue into our great race.

The red hot favourite for this year’s race, Incentivise, is a local horse but there are still a few internationals that could spoil the party for the Australian trained contingent.

Twilight Payment

The 2020 Melbourne Cup winner comes into this race in better form than he did last year when winning the race by half a length.

The now nine year old gelding was a dominant winner at Curragh by 1.8 lengths over 2816m before finishing second behind Sonnyboyliston by less than a length in the Irish St Leger.

He rises in weight from 55.5kg last year to 58kg this year and will have to defy history by becoming just the second horse in 66 years to carry the number 1 saddlecloth to victory to win the cup.

That horse was Makybe Diva in 2005 who set a mares weight carrying record in the race when winning her third consecutive Melbourne Cup.

Spanish Mission

Like most European horses, Spanish Mission has been in the stable for a long period of time, having his runs spaced out over time.

He started this prep way back in February and has been placed in four of his five starts throughout.

The Andrew Balding trained six year old has amassed $2.1 million in prize money from 18 career starts but he is yet to win at Group 1 level.

He was excellent when chasing home Stradivarius last start in the Lonsdale Cup when narrowly missing but he is being asked to carry 57kg in his first start in Australia.

There was a query on his fitness leading into the race but Craig Williams has given the horse his tick of approval after jumping on his back at Werribee on Sunday.

Williams rode Vow And Declare to victory two years ago and will steer from barrier 14.

Sir Lucan

If you are looking for a lightly raced, young import then this is your horse in the 2021 Melbourne Cup.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Sir Lucan doesn’t have the credentials of the other two Internationals but he does profile as the perfect raider in this years race.

Four year old’s have won more Melbourne Cups than any other age bracket (46 times) and Sir Lucan gets into the Cup with just 50kg!

Glen Boss knows how to win the race and he will be jumping from barrier 18.
