Week 9 of the NFL season begins Thursday night with the Indianapolis Colts hosting the New York Jets in a game the oddsmakers expect to be a mismatch.

The Colts (3-5) opened as 11.5-point favorites, even though they lost to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday while the Jets (2-5) beat the AFC North-leading Cincinnati Bengals. Both scores were 34-31.

The Titans (6-2) visit the Los Angeles Rams (7-1) on Sunday Night Football. The Rams are 6-point picks in a game featuring two teams on four-game winning streaks.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 6.5-point home favorites over the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. The Steelers (4-3) have won three games in a row and the Bears (3-5) have dropped three straight games.

Bills Big Favorites

Despite Indy’ big number, it is the Buffalo Bills rather than the Colts who are the biggest favorites in Week 9. The Bills are 13.5-point choices at home over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Bills looked rusty coming off their bye week before pulling away for a 26-11 victory over the Miami Dolphins at home Sunday.

The score was 3-3 at halftime before Josh Allen threw touchdown passes on two second-half drives to help the Bills (5-2) gain separation. The drives culminated with TD passes of 8 yards to Gabriel Davis and 19 yards to Stefon Diggs.

Jordan Poyer sealed the victory by intercepting a pass by Tua Tagovailoa with 2:21 remaining.

The Jaguars were thumped by the Seahawks 31-7 in Seattle.

Jacksonville avoided the fourth shutout in franchise history when Trevor Lawrence threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Agnew with 1:49 left.

2.5 Popular Spread

Three games opened with 2.5-point spreads, the lowest numbers on the boards.

The New England Patriots (4-4) are favored by that many on the road over the Carolina Panthers (4-4), as are the Cincinnati Bengals (5-3) at home over the Cleveland Browns (4-4), and the Kansas City Chiefs (3-4) over the Green Bay Packers (7-1).

The Patriots’ Adrian Phillips intercepted two passes, returning one for the go-ahead touchdown against his former team, as New England beat the Los Angeles Chargers 27-24 on Sunday on the road.

The Panthers ended a four-game losing streak with a 19-13 road victory over the Atlanta Falcons, Zane Gonzalez kicked four field goals and Chuba Hubbard scored on a 6-yard run with 6 minutes remaining.

The Browns lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 15-10 at home as wide receiver Jarvis Landry had a costly fumble and dropped two passes from Baker Mayfield.

Landry owned up to his mistakes.

Joe Burrow threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns for the Bengals, but the Jets limited star rookie wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase to three receptions for 32 yards.

The Packers notched a 24-21 road win over the previously unbeaten Cardinals on Thursday night to extend their winning streak to seven. The Chiefs host the New York Giants on Monday night.

Highs and Lows

The highest totals are 54.5 for Packers-Chiefs and Titans-Rams.

The Packers are averaging 24.0 points a game and allowing 20.9 while the Chiefs’ averages are 26.9 and 29.0. Meanwhile, the Titans have averages of 28.8 and 24.4 and the Rams’ figures are 30.6 and 21.0.

Is That Out of Line?

Though the 11.5-point spread for the Thursday night game is hefty, it is easy to envision enough money going on the Colts for it to go up. Though, the Colts have only one more win than the Jets at midseason, the talent gap between the two teams is considerable.

The Cardinals are 3-point road favorites over the San Francisco 49ers despite coming off their first loss. However, look for that number go up a bit as Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray is a fan favorite.
