Odds to Win 2022 Super Bowl MVP – Rams’ Stafford Favored, Burrow Given Best Odds Among Bengals

  • Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is the +100 favorite to be named Super Bowl MVP
  • His counterpart, Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow, is the +210 second betting choice
  • See the early 2022 Super Bowl MVP odds along with historical MVP betting trends

A quarterback playing in his home stadium was last season’s Super Bowl MVP. Oddsmakers are projecting history to repeat itself in the 2022 Super Bowl.

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford is the +100 favorite to be the winner of the MVP in this year’s game. He’ll be leading the Rams into the big game at SoFi Stadium, their home field, against the AFC-champion Cincinnati Bengals.

2022 Super Bowl MVP Odds

Aaron Donald (Rams) +2500
Odell Beckham Jr (Rams) +2500

Van Jefferson (Rams) +15000
Tyler Higbee (Rams) +15000
Kendall Blanton (Rams) +15000

Odds as of January 31st at BetMGM.

At +100 odds, Stafford has a 50 % implied probability of winning MVP. His counterpart, Cinci pivot Joe Burrow, is second at +210, which amounts to a 32.3% implied probability.

From there, it’s a steep drop to third-favorite Cooper Kupp, with the Rams wideout at +400 (20%). That’s followed by an even bigger chasm to Ja’Marr Chase at +1100 (8.3%)

Stafford Opens as the Favorite to Win Super Bowl MVP

Rallying the Rams from a 17-7 deficit for a 20-17 victory, Stafford fashioned the 35th fourth-quarter comeback of his career and fourth of this season. He threw for 337 yards and two TDs in what was his third playoff victory of this season and of his career. Stafford was listed at +1400 in the opening Super Bowl MVP odds.

Stafford will be the first QB to play the conference championship and Super Bowl in his home stadium in the same season. Last season, Tom Brady was named Super Bowl MVP for a record fifth time as he led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Raymond James Stadium, the Bucs’ home field. It was the first time in Super Bowl history that a team was playing in the game at home.

Stafford, in his first season in LA after being acquired from the Detroit Lions, teamed up with wide receiver Cooper Kupp to form the deadliest pass-catch combo in the NFL. Kupp swept the NFL receiving triple crown. He led the league in catches, reception yardage and receiving touchdowns.

Upstart Bengals Representing AFC

The upstart Cincinnati Bengals, just two seasons removed from a two-win campaign, will provide opposition for Super Bowl Sunday on Feb. 13. Second-year QB Joe Burrow, the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, is the +210 second betting choice in the Super Bowl MVP betting line.

Another Bengal worthy of consideration are wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. The favorite to win NFL OROY, Chase finished his first NFL campaign with league rookie marks for season (1,454) and single game (266) reception yardage. He became the first NFL rookie in 52 years to record multiple 200-yard receiving games.

Cincinnati running back Joe Mixon finished third in the NFL in rushing, gaining 1,205 yards on the ground.

Los Angeles is a 4-point home favorite in the Bengals vs Rams opening odds.  The initial line was LA -3.5 but, as is often the case, the NFL betting trends indicate that the public tends to bet on the Super Bowl favorite.

The Rams are playing in their second Super Bowl in four years. The Bengals are in the big game for the first time since 1989. LA is favored in the 2022 Super Bowl odds.

At odds of +100, Stafford is given an implied probability of 50% of winning the Super Bowl MVP award. A $100 wager on Stafford would provide a return on investment of $100.

Should you opt to wager $100 on Burrow at +210, then your wager would return a profit of $210 were the Cinci QB to be the MVP. The IP of Burrow winning at those odds is 32.26%.

Burrow seeks to join Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and Russell Wilson as NFL QBs who won the Super Bowl in their second season in the league. However, he’s the first #1 overall draft pick to get to the big game in his sophomore campaign.

He rallied the Bengals from a 21-3 deficit to beat the two-time defending AFC champion Chiefs 27-24 in overtime. Against KC, Burrow threw for two TDs and 250 yards. Burrow set new franchise records for passing yards (4,611) and touchdowns (34) this season.

If either Stafford or Burrow are Super Bowl MVP, they’d be the 19th QB to win it while playing in their first title game.

Past Super Bowl MVPs

Year Player (Team) Position
2012 Eli Manning (Giants) QB
2013 Joe Flacco (Ravens) QB
2014 Malcolm Smith (Seahawks) LB
2015 Tom Brady (Patriots) QB
2016 Von Miller (Broncos) DE
2017 Tom Brady (Patriots) QB
2018 Nick Foles (Eagles) QB
2019 Julian Edelman (Patriots) WR
2020 Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs) QB
2021 Tom Brady (Buccaneers) QB

The historical Super Bowl odds are weighted heavily toward the men under center. Over the course of 55 Super Bowl games, the MVP has been a QB 31 times.

Quarterbacks are the only position to win multiple MVP honors. After Brady’s five, Joe Montana won three and Terry Bradshaw, Bart Starr and Eli Manning won two each.

Running back and wide receiver are a distant second, each producing seven Super Bowl MVPs. It was New England receiver Julian Edelman in 2019 – interestingly, against the Rams – who was the last non-QB to win the award. A running back hasn’t won since Denver’s Terrell Davis in 1998.

Oddly enough, the only other position to show multiple MVPs in the past decade of Super Bowl games is linebacker. And one of them is in this game. Rams LB Von Miller was Super Bowl MVP with the 2016 Broncos.

Super Bowl MVP Pick

There’s an interesting trend taking place in the 2021-22 NFL playoffs. It’s the year of the kicker.

Five of the last six NFL postseason games were decided on game-winning field goals. Both Evan McPherson of the Bengals and Matt Gay of the Rams booted their teams to victory in each of the past two weeks. McPherson did it on successive weeks on the road on the game’s final play.

A kicker has never been Super Bowl MVP, though. Go with Stafford or Burrow as Super Bowl MVP. History shows that’s where the smart money should be placing their bets.

Pick: Matthew Stafford (+100)
