Feisty Collins Showing a Toned-Down Version

Collins, nicknamed the “Danimal”, has already developed a reputation as one of the loudest, feistiest competitors on the WTA Tour.

But this year, she has more often than not been rather subdued.

But while Andreescu was away, the American reached the final at the Australian Open, losing to the champion of destiny, Ashleigh Barty, even as her body was basically giving out after a gruelling two weeks.

Andreescu Trying to Keep it in Perspective

Andreescu herself was always a pretty feisty, demonstrative competitor.

But when she returned early in 2021 after a year and a half away from the game, she was a shadow of her former self. She was dealing with some things, and only in October did she decide a longer break was needed to address them.

In the brief sample size since her return, she looks to be making a significant effort to control her emotions on court.

But despite so little play, her game looks to be in pretty good shape. She also looks very fit.

First Meeting between the Canadian and American

The two players have never met before. But when Andreescu is firing all parts of her game, there is a significant contrast in styles.

What Collins brings to the table is  a lot of power. It’s nothing Andreescu hasn’t seen and dealt with before.

Andreescu, for her part, brings a full bag of tricks to the court. And many of those weapons – high, looping balls, slices on the forehand and backhand, drop shots and even the occasional foray to the net – are custom-designed to upset the rhythm of a power player like Collins.

Collins Struggles against Variety

Taking a look at Collins’s record against players who offer a variety of pace, she is 1-4 against the now-retired Barty.

She is 2-1 against the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, with one of those wins coming at the French Open in 2020. But those conditions, while on clay, were cold and miserable; that was the year the tournament was held in October because of the pandemic.

Croatia’s Petra Martic, who has a beautiful slice she utilizes with regularity, is 1-0 against Collins, with that win coming on grass.

Slowballer Sara Errani also is 1-0 against her, with a win on the slow Indian Wells courts back in 2018.

There are no perfect comparisons to Andreescu. But those results against the more “unorthodox” players do indicate Collins struggles some, when she doesn’t get the pace she loves.

Andreescu the Queen of the ‘Over’

Andreescu suffers from an abject lack of experience on clay. Before playing a few matches last spring, Andreescu only had one main-draw match at Tour level on the dirt.

Her victory over Alison Riske in the first round Friday was the first of her career over a top-50 player.

But the fact that she has the tools to play on it means she’s not half-defeated before she takes the court

Collins has significantly more. But nearly all her wins have come against lower-ranked players, with the exception of a win over Garbiñe Muguruza in the same chilly French Open that also featured the win over Jabeur.

The biggest thing about this match – about Andreescu, generally – is that she consistently delivers on the total games prop. She’s 48-18-3 on the “over” since the start of 2019.

She’s also 14-9 since 2019 as the underdog.

Best Bet: Over 21.5 Games (-110)
