It’s hard to believe but there wasn’t a single upset in the First Round of the NBA Playoffs. Not only that, but none of the series went seven games, and only four made it to six games.

On of those teams that needed six games to advance was the West’s number two seed Memphis, and the Grizzlies will begin their Second Round series versus the Golden State Warriors on Sunday (May 1), as home underdogs.

The third seeded Warriors opened up as a 2-point favorite in Game 1, in a contest that features a total of 220. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30pm ET at FedExForum in Memphis, TN, with ABC providing the broadcast coverage.

As for the series market, Golden State has odds of -265 to advance to the conference final, while the Grizzlies are +215 underdogs to move on to the next round. They also have the best Western Conference odds.

Memphis Grizzlies Betting Analysis

The Grizzlies made history in their opening round series thanks to some outrageous fourth quarter play. Memphis finished with a fourth quarter point differential of +62 over Minnesota, and became the first team in NBA history to log three postseason victories by overcoming a double-digit deficit in the final frame.

The Grizzlies were forced to rally in their series clinching victory over the T-Wolves in Game 6, erasing a 10-point deficit en route to a 114-106 win.

Minnesota did an excellent job all series limiting Ja Morant’s scoring production, but they couldn’t stop his playmaking. Morant averaged 21.5 points in the First Round, six points less than his regular season average, but made up for it by distributing 10.5 assists per contest.

His teammates picked up the slack in the points department, most noticeably Desmond Bane. The second-year star averaged 23.5 points in the First Round, on a 66% true shooting percentage. Dillon Brooks eclipsed 22 points in three of six games, while Brandon Clarke provided excellent production down the middle for an absent Steven Adams.

Clarke averaged 19 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists in Games 5 and 6 with Adams out. He’ll be called upon to do a similar job in Game 1 against Golden State. That’s because Adams remains in the health and safety protocols.

Memphis is off to the Second Round for just the fourth time in franchise history, and the first time since 2015.

Golden State Warriors Betting Analysis

The Warriors meanwhile, looked like arguably the best team in the West during the First Round. They dispatched Denver in five games, in large part to their new lethal small ball lineup.

The combination of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Jordan Poole, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins gave the Nuggets fits, and had an offensive rating of 147.8 points per 100 possessions. That was easily the best rating of any five-man unit in the opening round. It figures to get even more run against the Grizzlies.

Steph Curry averaged 28 points versus Denver, despite coming off the bench for the first four games due to injury. Klay Thompson meanwhile, chipped in with 22 points a night on 46% shooting from beyond the arc, but the most pleasant surprise was the play of Jordan Poole.

The third-year guard averaged 21 points and 5.4 assists against the Nuggets, carrying the offensive load for long stretches in the first few games while Curry’s minutes were limited.

Golden State is a nightmare matchup for any team, and led the First Round in scoring by averaging 118 points a night.

On the injury front, the team will have to make do without reserve Andre Iguodala for the foreseeable future due to a neck injury.

Grizzlies vs Warriors Pick

Memphis was able to get away with falling behind big to Minnesota in nearly every game of the First Round. It’s something you just can’t do against the Warriors, though. Golden State will not take its foot off the gas, and with the Grizzlies likely exhausted from yet another hard fought victory on Friday, expect the Warriors to get off to a fast start in Game 1.

Memphis did take three of four from Golden State during the regular season. But it’s important to note that the Warriors were not at full strength for any of those contests. Also of note, Curry’s numbers versus the Grizzlies when he did play.

Now, with every member of their new lethal small ball lineup healthy, the Warriors impressive postseason run will continue on Sunday with a Game 1 victory.

Pick: Golden State Warriors Moneyline (-130)
