The countdown to the 2022 French Open women’s singles final is on, as the last two quarterfinal matches are set to be played Wednesday, rounding out the final four.

25-year old Kudermetova will take on fellow 25-year old Kasatkina in the first match of the day. The two are set to take the court at 6:00 am ET. Neither player had strong odds to win the tournament heading in. But now Kasatkina has the third best odds to win, behind Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff.

Kudermetova’s First Grand Slam Quarterfinal

It took one hour and 21 minutes for Kudermetova to book a spot in her first Slam quarterfinal, defeating American Madison Keys 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.

It was only last year that Kudermetova started making some waves in the tennis world, where she captured her first title. Since then then 25-year old has had a fairly steady increase in play and result, and now she’s made it to the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

The Russian entered the round of 16 match as the underdog. But Kudermetova managed to read Keys from the start. Being able to attack the American’s serve, plus quite a few unforced errors, the 25-year old was in a position to win the match. Keys ended with 26 winners and 31 unforced errors, with only five winners and 13 unforced errors coming specifically in the last set.

Kudermetova will have her work cut out for her against fellow countrywoman Kasatkina. The two Russians haven’t played against each other a whole lot, and this will be their first meeting on clay.

Kasatkina Returns to the Final Eight

25-year old Kasatkina has been on a tear in Paris. The Russian has yet to drop a set on route to the semifinals, and is coming off a strong 6-2, 6-2, win over Italy’s Camila Giorgi.

Not only has Kasatkina not dropped a set, but she’s only managed to lose a total of 14 games in her four matches, with only losing four games in her fourth round matchup. She’s only lost serve twice, and managed to save all six breakpoints that she saw against Giorgi.

The former World No. 10, is slowly trying to make her way up to the top after a couple less than ideal year, and will be competing in the French Open quarters for the first time since 2018.

She will be the favorite as she takes on Kudermetova in the next round, which will be Kasatkina’s third major quarterfinal.

Second Meeting Between Kudermetova and Kasatkina

The first time Kudermetova and Kasatkina played against one another was last year during the quarterfinals of the St. Petersburg Open. Kasatkina who was the eighth seed at the time defeated second seed Kudermetova in three sets.

Kasatkina lost the first set, but managed to piece together a comeback to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Kasatkina is the Best Bet

Both players have the capabilities to win this match, but with the way Kasatkina has played this tournament, it’s hard to bet against her. The statistics do speak for themselves. Not a single set dropped, and only 14 games lost on route to the quarters. She has been here before, so she also has the edge of some familiar territory.

Kudermetova will put up a good fight. She’s coming off a strong win over Keys, but she has spent a bit more time on the court than Kasatkina has, and fatigue could start becoming an issue.

Given how Kasatkina is playing and her previous win over her compatriot, look for Kasatkina to take this one.

Best Bet: Kasatkina 2-0 (+111)
