Canterbury Preview – Wednesday 3rd August

Seven races will be run and won at Canterbury in Sydney’s west on Wednesday, August 3rd.

The rain continues to fall in New South Wales and at publish, the track is rated in the heavy (9) range, while the rail will be set out eight metres around the entire course.

Race 1 - 12:50pm

Quayclean Handicap (1580m)

Spirit Of Vomo has improved for two starts since debuting and is ready to break his maiden at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The Spirit Of Boom gelding finished fourth, beaten just over a length on debut at Gosford and flashed late into second at Warwick Farm last time out.

Fitter third-up, this looks his opportunity to strike.

Race 2 - 1:25pm

Furphy Plate (1100m)

There’s hardly any form to study ahead of the second at Canterbury on Wednesday and at publish, several debutants are prominent in the market.

There is simply too much that could happen in a race like this one for my liking, and I am happy to stay out from a betting perspective.

Race 3 - 2pm

Bowermans Handicap (1900m)

This is a drop in class for Speed Legend and I am confident that he is ready to win.

The Star Witness gelding has been a consistent performer since debuting, and he returned this time for consecutive placings at the midweeks before finishing fifth in a better race at Rosehill Gardens last time out.

He steps out this week in peak order, gets a bit of relief in the weights under Chris Williams and should receive every chance from an inside draw.

Race 4 - 2:35pm

Schweppes Handicap (1580m)

Mystic Mermaid takes winning form into the fourth at Canterbury on Wednesday and looks well placed to make it two in a row.

The Fastnet Rock mare has continued to improve with each start back this time, culminating in a nice win over a mile at Newcastle.

This is harder, but she steps out in peak order under James McDonald, and it does look the next logical step for her.

Race 5 - 3:10pm

Benchmark 72 Handicap (1580m)

Sacred Command gets back to a suitable race at Canterbury this week and can return to winning form.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding placed at his first two starts back this time before recording an impressive win in BM70 company at Ladbrokes Park.

He was fair at best behind Alcyone at Rosehill Gardens last time out, but looks to be at peak fitness this week and will relish a rain-affected track.

Race 6 - 3:45pm

Ranvet Handicap (1100m)

Ten Bells hasn’t been seen at the races since October, but she is yet to taste anything but success at this point of her prep, and she can make a winning return.

The Nicconi mare was nothing short of outstanding last time in, winning three of four starts including a couple of Highway races at Randwick.

A couple of smart trials recently suggested that she is quite forward and this looks a lovely launchpad for her.

Race 7 - 4:20pm

Vinery Stallions Handicap (1250m)

Overlord was an eye-catching winner of a similar contest at Warwick Farm when resuming this time, and I don’t see a reason why we should jump off this week.

The well-bred gelding has been a decent performer for the Waller stable in similar races throughout his career, and he has found form around some quality gallopers.

With natural improvement and leaving from the good draw, this certainly looks within his means.
