2022 Wyong Gold Cup Day Preview

Black-type racing returns to Wyong this Friday with the Wyong Gold Cup and the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes headlining the eight-race program.

We’ve analysed the entire meeting and offer our best bets below.

Race 1 - 12:45pm AEDT

Stone Real Estate Wyong 4YO&UP Maiden Plate (1350m)

Notabadsuspect returned well at Goulburn a few weeks ago when running a clear second over a similar trip.

He had genuine excuses in the run after getting away slowly and copping some interference down the straight, but he should have plenty more room this time from a much wider gate.

The winner of that race has since gone on to win again and there is definite improve to come.

1 Unit Notabadsuspect

Race 2 - 1:20pm AEDT

Central Coast Coolrooms Da Vinci Benchmark 64 Handicap (1300m)

It’s hard to ignore Sumatra’s dominant maiden win first-up at Hawkesbury a fortnight ago.

The Lonhro filly reeled them in from midfield with a dominant turn of foot in the finish, and I think another firm track will be to her liking here with Sam Clipperton piloting once again.

She was far from disgraced in much tougher company during her maiden prep and she maps to get another nice run off the speed here.

2 Units Sumatra

Race 3 - 1:55pm AEDT

PBL Law Group Maiden Handicap (1200m)

Difficult race, but I think it’s a winnable one for Sacred Field in his second run back.

The Jo Pride-trained four-year-old just lacked the fitness in the run home over shorter here a few weeks ago when third, but I thought he showed some extra kick through the line to suggest he’ll handle the step up now.

He ran well in town during his maiden prep last year and the added chance of rain will only strengthen his claims. Just needs luck to go his way from the barrier.

1 Unit Sacred Field

Race 4 - 2:35pm AEDT

Hunter Petroleum Products Class 1 Handicap (1100m)

Bayezid stuck to the task in tough conditions at Newcastle a few weeks ago to win narrowly on debut.

He loses the class of James McDonald in the saddle, but he looks to be a horse of real potential for Godolphin.

A firmer track should be more to his liking here, while the form out of that previous race stacks up with the second place-getter going on to win his next assignment.

2 Units Bayezid

Race 5 - 3:10pm AEDT

Bishop Collins Chartered Accountants BM64 Handicap (1600m)

Coppleson was impressive on debut for Chris Waller, settling towards the tail of the field before rounding them up at the top of the straight to go on and win narrowly.

He’s been kept fresh for the run with a trial between starts, and off that, I think the rise to the mile will suit.

Faces a much firmer track here after winning in heavy conditions, but he’s drawn to get a similar run in transit with Brenton Avdulla retaining the ride.

2 Units Coppleson

Race 6 - 3:50pm AEDT

Listed Wyong Leagues Group Mona Lisa Takes (1350m)

Expat is always a threat over this distance, as we saw during the spring when she won over 1300m at Rosehill by a pretty clear margin.

The Makfi mare has returned a couple of pleasing trials in the lead-up to her return and she’ll appreciate any rain about on the day.

Barrier 4 gives Tom Sherry plenty of options, but I suspect we’ll see the pair push forward early and make their own luck on the speed.

1 Unit Expat

Race 7 - 4:25pm AEDT

Carlton Wyong Gold Cup (2100m)

Lord Ardmore appears well-placed to return to the winner’s circle in his Wyong debut..

The son of Reliable Man was denied his hat-trick at Randwick a couple of weeks ago when beaten a length in the Premier Cup, a run he can only improve on getting out over further with Hugh Bowman sticking in the saddle.

He was a touch disappointing that day over the final 200m, but given this is a step back in class, I think he’ll make amends.

3 Units Lord Ardmore

Race 8 - 5:05pm AEDT

The Doylo Springtime Conditional BM68 Handicap (1100m)

Oakfield Duke made it a hat-trick at Grafton last time out and has been kept fresh for his first start on his home track.

The lightly-raced four-year-old has risen through the grades in impressive style under Aaron Bullock, and although this is a step up in class, he’s certainly the deserving favourite on recent form.

He won a trial here last year and barrier 7 should see him slot in midfield.

2 Units Oakfield Duke
