Kansas is a 27.5-point home favorite over Tennessee Tech in the first meeting between the two at 8:00 pm ET Friday (Sep. 3) in Lawrence on ESPN+ in the season opener for both teams. The Jayhawks have not beaten a team by more than 27 points since a 55-14 victory over Rutgers in the third week of 2018.

Tennessee Tech was picked to finished fifth in the seven-team OVC. The Golden Eagles have not had a winning league or overall record since they were the league co-champion in 2011 at 7-4 (6-2).

On the eve of Kansas sports betting going live, the Jayhawks are listed as 27.5-point favorites over the Golden Eagles. The total sits at 52.5 while the moneyline is off the board.

 

 

Jayhawks Approaching Relevancy?

The question for Kansas this season is, are the Jayhawks’ final 3 3/4 games of 2021 the precursor of a program turnaround or simply the highlight of another woeful season? A glass half-full guy would say things are looking up, even if the CFP wins totals odds disagree.

The 2-10 Jayhawks improved dramatically last season after sophomore Jalon Daniels replaced transfer Justin Bean at quarterback early in a  35-10 loss to Kansas State in week nine. Daniels completed 70.3 percent of his passes for 811 yards and seven touchdowns (three picks) while rushing for 94 yards and three more scores in that time frame.

Daniels’ biggest game was a 57-56 overtime victory at Texas in which he threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 45 yards and another score. The Hawks lost one-score games at TCU and to West Virginia in their final two but covered the spread in all three of Daniels’ starts.

Daniels’ weapons return. Leading rusher Devin Neal and four offensive line starters are back on a team that averaged 352 yards total offense in the final four games, although the the NCAAF strength of schedule rankings indicate a steep road ahead.

Kansas’ three leading tacklers return, and preseason All-Big 12 selection safety Kenny Logan Jr. had 113 tackles a year, tops among safeties.

Tennessee Tech Steps Way Up in Class

The Golden Eagles have struggled to compete in the Ohio Valley Conference for the last decade. They won a share of the league title in 2011 but have not had a winning record since, and this is a money game designed to help fund an athletic program that (like Kansas) is more competitive in basketball.

Tech was picked to finish fifth in a preseason poll of league coaches in the seven-team OVC after finishing last in the league in three of the previous five seasons, including 2021 (1-5, 3-8).

The Golden Eagles will have a new/old quarterback in Jeremiah Oatsvall, who was the OVC Freshman of the Year at Austin Peay in 2017 and played four seasons there before transferring to Memphis as a wide receiver in 2021, although he did not see the field.

Tennessee Tech is 2-37 against FBS opponents, the last victory coming in 1980 over Western Carolina. Tech has lost 35 in a row against FBS teams.

Tennessee Tech vs Kansas Prediction

Kansas coach Lance Leipold has the resumè to indicate that he can turn a program respectable, similar to the way arch-rival Kansas State did under Bill Snyder two decades ago, although the Jayhawks are still  Big 12’s longest shot in the conference title odds. 

Leipold was 109-6 with five NCAA Division III titles in eight seasons at Wisconsin-Whitewater and took Buffalo to two bowl wins before arriving in Lawrence last year. That being said, the Jayhawks will use this game as a way to build on the positive momentum gained late last season against a team that is severely outclassed.

The number is very big, but the Jayhawks will not be averse to running it up in preparation for road games at West Virginia and Houston. They should be able to name the score.
