Cleveland Cavaliers Betting Analysis

Cleveland has won five of seven overall, losing only to Toronto and Milwaukee, the co-favorite in the NBA Championship odds, during that stretch.

They’re one of only three teams to rank inside the top-seven in offensive and defensive rating, and they boast the third best average score margin in the NBA.

Last time out, they actually fell 100-88 to the Raptors, thanks to a horrendous shooting performance. The Cavs finished just 34 of 90 (37.8%) from the field, which is a full 10% lower their season long mark. Cleveland was a dismal 7 of 38 from three (18.4%), and their poor offensive efficiency actually covered up a very solid performance on defense.

Donovan Mitchell had his worst performance of the season, scoring just 8 points on 11 shots. Mitchell was averaging 31 points over his previous four games, and ranks seventh in the league in scoring. We shouldn’t expect him to fail again versus Philly, although as we’ll discuss, the Sixers defense is no joke.

In their own end meanwhile, the Cavs held the Raptors to 44% from the field and only seven offensive rebounds. They enter play with the third best scoring defense, while yielding the seventh lowest opponent field goal percentage.

On the injury front, Cleveland will be missing a pair of key contributors. Kevin Love is out due to a thumb injury, while starting center Jarrett Allen will sit with a back issue.

Philadelphia 76ers Betting Analysis

Philadelphia enters play having won three straight and seven of nine overall. They grade out 15th in offensive rating, but third in defensive rating.

Their offensive rating would surely be significantly higher if not for a plethora of injuries. They’ve been missing Joel Embiid, James Harden and Tyrese Maxey, aka their top-three players, for large chunks of the season.

Harden and Maxey remain out as they both deal with foot injuries, but Embiid returned from his latest four game absence on Monday with a bang.

Last year’s scoring champion poured in 30 points in a 104-101 win over Atlanta, and was a one-man show in the final minute. Embiid scored seven points in the final 60 seconds, including the game-winning bucket and multiple free throws to ice the contest. He also forced a turnover in that time, breaking up a lob pass that could have resulted in a go-head score.

Whenever Embiid is on the floor the offense runs through him, but the Sixers have gotten key production from their ancillary pieces during this prolonged stretch of injuries. Shake Milton has been the most pleasant surprise, scoring at least 22 points in four of five games.

Tobias Harris has also stepped up, averaging over 23 points a night during his past five contests.

76ers vs Cavaliers Betting Analysis

With two of the league’s top defenses on display, naturally the under in this contest should be in consideration. Add in the fact that six of the Cavs’ last seven games have failed to clear the total, and the interest is heightened.

But Cleveland games aren’t just going under the total, they’re coming up well short of the number. Four of their past six games have come in at least 11.5 points below the total, while all Cleveland contests over that stretch are going under by an average of 12.5 points.

NBA Defensive Rating Rankings

Rank Team Rating
1 Milwaukee Bucks 106.5
2 LA Clippers 107.6
3 Philadelphia 76ers 108.1
4 Cleveland Cavaliers 108.2
5 New Orleans Pelicans 109.1

Not to be outdone, three of Philly’s last four games have failed to clear the number as well. The under is 7-5 the Sixers 12 games since Harden went down, and 1-4 in five road outings where the 76ers are catching points.

Philadelphia has held each of its past three opponents below 104 points, while 10 of their last 11 opponents have failed to reach 110 points.

Pick: Under 212 (-110)
