It’s looking like a 2-horse race in the upcoming Patriot League Championship Tournament, with a lone NCAA Tournament berth up for grabs.

The class of the league are the Colgate Raiders, who set a conference record with 17 league wins in 18 games. They are seeking their fourth conference title in the past five years.

On the other side of the bracket are the Navy Midshipmen, who gave the Raiders all they could handle in their league finale.

2023 Patriot League Tournament Odds

Team Seed Odds
Colgate Raiders 1 -220
Navy Midshipmen 2 +270
Army West Point Black Knights 4 +1100
 Lehigh Mountain Hawks 3 +1600
Lafayette Leopards 6 +4000
Boston University Terriers 5 +3100
American Eagles 7 +8000
Loyola (MD) Greyhounds 8 +20000
Bucknell Bisons 10 +25000
Holy Cross Crusaders 9 +30000

The Raiders are the odds on favorite to win Patriot League Conference Championship, at -220 odds, an implied probability of 68.75%.

Colgate will look to duplicate last year’s regular season and conference tourney double, which would mark just the fifth time that’s happened in the past 12 years.

Navy is the only other Patriot League team with odds inside the +1000 range at +270, giving them an implied probability of 27.03%.

Patriot League Tournament Schedule

The tournament begins Tuesday (Feb 28), kicking off with No. 10 Bucknell facing off with No. 7 American, and No. 9 Holy Cross squaring off with No. 8 Loyola Maryland. All games will be played at the school gym of the higher-ranked team.

The top six seeds earned automatic bids into the quarterfinals. Confirmed QF matchups on March 2 are 3rd-seeded Lehigh hosting Lafayette and Bosting University visiting Army West Point in a battle of 4-5 seeds. The opening round and quarterfinals can be seen on ESPN+.

The final four goes on Sunday, March 5, and the championship finale is Wednesday (March 8) at 7:30pm ET. All of those games can be seen live on CBS Sports Network.

Can Anyone Topple Colgate?

It’s been a banner year for Colgate, though they started their nonconference schedule at 6-7, including their only game to a ranked team all season, losing to then-15th Auburn 93-66.

They blasted off in the Patriot League, where they lost just once in their final 18 games. They enter this tournament winners of  six straight, and will play all their games at home, where they have nine consecutive and 28 straight within the conference.

They boast a legitimate offense, which ranks first in three-point shooting in the NCAA at 40.6% — the only school that topped 40% from distance this season.

Led by Patriot League Player of the Year Tucker Richardson — also named defensive player of the year — the Raiders put 77.7 points per game (44th) and rank 56th in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency metric.

Navy is likely the best hope of knocking off the overwhelming favorite, though they were crushed 87-73 by Colgate on January 5. That was part of a 5-game skid that dropped the Midshipmen to 8-10 on the year.

They rallied, however, reeling off wins in 10 of their next 11 before losing a close 64-60 finale to Colgate. Senior Dan Deaver — named to the Patriot League first team — had 15 points, 12 rebounds and three assists off the bench.

It’s slim pickings down the rest of the league. The only team that knocked off Colgate in conference play was American, who are seeded seventh, and distant +8000 odds. There’s no guarantee they even climb out of the opening round.

Lehigh has the 4th-best odds (+1600) to take the tournament, but they stagger into into the Patriot League, having lost five of their last eight.

In terms of long shots, perhaps it’s the Army West Point Black Knights (+1100). They put up 73.1 points per game, 144th in the NCAA, but they have just five wins in their final 12 games to close out the season.

2023 Patriots Tournament Prediction

Even the most powerful telescope can’t help you find NCAA Tournament odds for any school in the Patriot League. Colgate is the predicted winner of the Patriot League but that earns them a 15-seed in SBD’s projected March Madness bracket.

Not much drama here, and while there’s definitely better value picking Navy to pull off an upset, the Raiders’ offense should carry them to a repeat.

Pick: Colgate Raiders (-220)
