The San Diego Padres (37-45, 17-23 away) continue their road trip on Saturday in Ohio as they take on the surging Cincinnati Reds (44-38, 22-20 home) at the Great American Ballpark. The first pitch here is scheduled for 1:35 PM ET.

The Padres have yet to officially announce who will start here, but it does look like it’s going to be Michael Wacha since Yu Darvish is still dealing with an illness. The Reds meanwhile send Brandon Williamson to the hill.

San Diego vs Cincinnati Probable Pitchers

It’s common knowledge that San Diego’s rotation is about their only bright spot this season. Wacha is certainly doing his part in helping them achieve the utmost success, going 7-2 with a 2.90 ERA in 14 starts. 2023 can be considered a bounce-back campaign for the former Texas A&M standout, who struggled for several years after breaking into the big leagues with the Cardinals.

Along with the impressive ERA, Wacha also had a 1.05 WHIP. He’s struck out 69 hitters in 80.2 innings while walking 23. The righty has pitched a minimum of six innings in three straight outings, surrendering a mere two earned runs in the process. Wacha owns a 12-3 record and a 2.57 ERA in 133.1 career innings against the Reds. Quite the sample size.

Wacha vs Williamson Stats

Michael Wacha
VS
Brandon Williamson
7-2 Record 1-1
2.90 ERA 5.82
80.2 Innings Pitched 38.2
69 Strikeouts 29
23 Walks 17

Williamson isn’t having the best rookie year for Cincy. He’s 1-1 with a rough 5.82 ERA in eight starts, giving up no shortage of runs. The ex-TCU star has walked 17 in 38.2 frames and struck out 29. The home run ball seems to be an issue for Williamson, allowing eight long balls.

The 25-year-old’s last outing was very brief, tossing only two innings against the Baltimore Orioles, surrendering three earned runs on two hits. The biggest problem in that star was command, walking four.  He’s never faced the Padres before.

Padres Are in Shambles

San Diego is down bad right now. They’ve lost six in a row and have won just two of their last 10 games. A sweep at the hands of the Pirates was bad enough before a gut-wrenching extra innings loss on Friday to the Reds by a score of 7-5.

Once again, it was because the Padres couldn’t hold a lead. Up 5-4 in the bottom of the 11th, Drew Carlton unraveled and blew the game. San Diego is in desperate need of a win and hopefully, Wacha can put them in a good position to end the cold skid Saturday.

Are The Reds For Real?

Don’t look now but the Reds are in first place in the NL Central and opening eyes all across the MLB. Elly De La Cruz has injected life into this ball club and looks to be a superstar in the making.

Cincinnati is 7-3 in their last 10 and just won 12 straight not long ago. Their offense is propelling them with five runs per game while also ranking top 10 in average. The confidence is absolutely sky-high at the moment.

Padres vs Reds Picks

How long can the dry spell go on for San Diego? Who knows. However, Wacha’s success against the Reds is enough for me to take the Padres with confidence.

Pick: Padres moneyline -155
