Los Angeles vs Toronto Starting Pitchers

Both LA and Toronto enter play in the thick of the AL Wild Card race, with the latter boasting a top-seven price in the World Series odds.

Toronto will give the ball to Jose Berrios, who’ll be looking to exorcise some demons versus the LA regulars in the MLB starting lineups. Berrios has been hammered by the Angles in previous meetings, yielding a .391/.451/.987 slash line. He coughed up six hits and six runs to LA earlier this season and surrendered the same amount of hits and runs against them in 2022.

No player on the Angels has had more success versus Berrios than Shohei Ohtani, who’s 7-for-16 with three home runs. The AL MVP odds favorite isn’t the only one with outrageous stats against Berrios though, as Mike Moustakas, Hunter Renfroe, and Luis Rengifo are a combined 9-for-20, with three dingers.

Fortunately for Blue Jays backers, there’s a pair of things working in Berrios’ favor. For one, he enters in strong form. The 29-year-old has allowed two runs or less in four straight starts, yielding just five runs in his last 23.1 innings. The second is the fact that LA is currently slumping at the dish, and is missing some key offensive pieces.

Anderson vs Berrios Stats

Tyler Anderson
VS
Jose Berrios
5-2 Record 8-7
5.23 ERA 3.40
1.55 WHIP 1.19
.283 OBA .237
2.0 SO/W Ratio 3.1

Tyler Anderson will counter for the Angels, fresh off his best month of the season. The southpaw currently owns a 3.93 ERA in July, holding the opposition to eight runs over 18.1 innings. Last time out, he gave LA 6.0 innings in a victory over Pittsburgh but has a less-than-stellar track record versus Toronto.

The Blue Jays tagged him for seven hits, five runs, and two homers in their lone meeting against him this season, while Toronto batters are slashing .265/.351/.485 lifetime versus the 33-year-old.

Angels vs Blue Jays Predictions

Anderson also has the unfortunate luck of facing the Blue Jays at the wrong time. Toronto has smacked seven home runs already this series, giving them 13 dingers in their last six games. The Blue Jays took two of three from the Dodgers earlier this week, and have moved past the Astros for the AL’s second Wild Card spot.

Both Alejandro Kirk and Santiago Espinal went deep twice in Saturday’s 6-1 victory, while Whit Merrifield and Bo Bichette are each hitting north of .400 for the week. Merrifield, Matt Chapman, and Danny Jansen also have a pair of homers this week, with all three posting an OPS north of 1.070.

Angels vs Blue Jays 2023 H2H Results

Date Away Team Home Team Result
July 29 Angels Blue Jays TOR, 6-1
July 28 Angels Blue Jays TOR, 4-1
April 9 Blue Jays Angels TOR, 12-11
April 8 Blue Jays Angels LA, 9-5
April 7 Blue Jays Angels TOR, 4-3

The Blue Jays were victimized by an Ohtani home run on the first pitch he saw in the series on Friday, but since then Toronto’s refused to let the best player in baseball beat them. Ohtani was intentionally walked both times he came up with runners on base on Saturday, and was hit by a pitch in a separate at-bat.

He laced a double when they did try to pitch to him, but it’s clear that if the game is in the balance and there are runners on, Toronto is going to give him the Barry Bonds treatment.

That’s especially effective given the bats LA is missing. Mike Trout is still on IR, as are Brandon Drury and Anthony Rendon. That puts the Angels down three of their top hitters, and it’s shown so far this weekend. LA is 0-for-17 in this series with runners in scoring position, and their lone run on Saturday was walked in.

Pick: Toronto Blue Jays Moneyline and Over 4.5 Runs (-105)
