Looking to move into the West’s top six, the Dallas Mavericks (33-24, 15-11 away, 30-27 ATS) play the second of a four-game road trip tonight against the Cleveland Cavaliers (37-19, 19-10 home, 28-26-2 ATS), who are trying to hold off Milwaukee for the #2 seed in the East. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:10 pm ET at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Cleveland is a 4.5-point home favorite in the Mavericks vs Cavaliers odds on Tuesday.

Thanks to a run of 17 wins in 18 games shortly before the All-Star break, the Cavaliers leapfrogged Milwaukee for the #2 seed in the East portion of the NBA playoff bracket. Cleveland would face the winner of the 7-vs-8 Play-In game (Orlando vs Indiana, at the moment) if the postseason started today.

Dallas is currently the #8 seed in the West, tied with #7 Sacramento and just half a game back of both #5 Phoenix and #6 New Orleans in the tightly-packed Western Conference standings.

Mavericks’ Win Streak Comes to an End

Dallas had moved into the top-six briefly thanks to a seven game win streak that spanned the All-Star break and included three road Ws (118-102 at Philadelphia, 119-107 at Brooklyn, and 122-108 at New York). But a 133-111 loss at Indiana on Sunday brought the win streak to an end and dropped the Mavs back into the Play-In zone.  Luka Doncic (33 points, six assists, six rebounds) and Kyrie Irving (29 points, six rebounds, two assists) were both solid at the offensive end and Dallas shot 45.2% from three, but the team’s defense was nonexistent, allowing the Pacers to shoot 55.9% from the field and grab eight more rebounds (46-38).

This will be the second and final meeting of the year between the teams. Cleveland took a 113-110 victory in Dallas back on Dec. 27, dominating the glass (57-37) thanks to a monster 24-point, 23-rebound performance from center Jarrett Allen. Notably, Irving missed that game due to injury.

During an injury-plagued campaign, Dallas sits 11th in O-Rating (117.5) but just 21st in D-Rating (116.4).

Several Mavs are listed on the team’s injury report for Tuesday with minor ailments, but only Dante Exum (9.2 PPG, 2.8 APG, 19.7 MPG) is expected to be out of today’s NBA lineups.

Cavaliers Stumble Out of the Gate Post All-Star Game

Cleveland had been the hottest team in the league in the six weeks prior to the All-Star break, winning 18 of 20 games in that span. But the Cavs have lost two of three since returning to action, including a 116-109 home loss to Orlando and a 104-97 setback to the injury-riddled 76ers in Philadelphia.

They did manage to get back in the win column last time out, but a 114-105 win at lowly Washington as 13.5-point favorites isn’t going to turn heads.

Donovan Mitchell (28.1 PPG, 6.2 APG, 5.4 RPG) continues to spearhead the Cleveland offense, getting valuable secondary production from Darius Garland (18.2 PPG, 6.2 APG), but defense is the team’s calling card. The Cavs have moved up to second in the NBA in D-Rating (110.4) and sit fourth in Net Rating (+5.4) despite ranking just 15th in O-Rating (115.9).

With Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley both averaging double-digit rebounds per game (10.6 and 10.0, respectively), Cleveland is in the top-ten in rebound percentage (51.0%).

Doncic has a point total of 32.5 O/U, which is still nearly two points lower than his season average (34.3 PPG) due to facing the league’s second-best defense. Mitchell (25.5) is the highest among Cavs players, while Allen (10.5) is the only player with a double-digit rebound total.

Mavericks vs Cavaliers Prediction

Dallas had an off night last time out, but I do believe in the team that general manager Nico Harrison has constructed. Acquiring 6″10 center Daniel Gafford from the Wizards at the deadline has already helped with the Mavs’ issues on the glass. Gafford averaged 12 rebounds per game in his first three contests in a Dallas uniform (all wins). If he’s able to whittle down the rebound discrepancy that allowed Cleveland to leave Dallas with a win back in December, the outcome on Tuesday night may look different.

DAL vs CLE pick: Mavericks +4.5 (-110)

Sascha Paruk’s 2023-24 NBA betting record:

  • 17-21 moneyline (+4.06 units)
  • 13-12-2 ATS (+0.95 units)
  • 7-12 player props (-6.82 units)
  • 0-3 same-game parlay (-3.00 units)

All wagers one unit unless expressly stated otherwise
