Avs Betting Analysis

After dropping the series opener in a wild 7-6 affair, the Avalanche have reeled off three straight convincing victories to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. Colorado won Game 2 by a score of 5-2, dominated Game 3 6-2, and cruised to a 5-1 win in Game 4.

The high-powered Avalanche offense has been the story, scoring five or more goals in all four games of the series. Colorado is surging in the Stanley Cup odds and drawing comparisons to the powerhouse 2022 team that won the championship.

Colorado’s top players have been as advertised. Nathan MacKinnon, who finished fourth in the NHL with 140 points in the regular season, has seven points through the first four playoff games. Linemate Mikko Rantanen, who topped 100 points himself, has also been productive.

But it’s been the secondary scoring of Valeri Nichushkin (six goals in the series) and Artturi Lehkonen (four goals, three assists) that has put the Avs over the top. Defensively, Norris Trophy finalist Cale Makar continues to drive play at both ends with eight points so far.

In net, Alexandar Georgiev stumbled out of the gate allowing seven goals in Game 1. But the former Ranger has bounced back strong, allowing just two goals each in Games 2 and 3 before a 26-save effort in the 5-1 Game 4 win. For the series, Georgiev has a 3.04 GAA and .885 save percentage.

Jets Betting Analysis

The Jets took Game 1 in thrilling fashion, getting a late overtime winner for a 7-6 victory. But it’s been all Colorado since as Winnipeg has dropped three straight, getting outscored 16-5 in the process. The Jets lost Game 2 at home 5-2, then fell 6-2 and 5-1 in Colorado as the series shifted to Denver.

Winnipeg’s lack of depth has been exposed by the Avalanche. Trade deadline acquisitions Tyler Toffoli and Sean Monahan produced in the regular season but haven’t made a major impact matched up against Colorado’s elite. Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele, the Jets’ leading scorers, have struggled mightily at even strength in this series.

Defensively, the Jets simply don’t have the foot speed on the backend to handle the Avalanche attack. Colorado is gaining the offensive zone at will and spending long stretches hemming the Jets in. To make matters worse, defenseman Brenden Dillon will miss Game 5 after suffering a hand laceration in Game 4.

The Jets are also likely to be without forward Vladislav Namestnikov who took a puck to the face last game.

In net, Connor Hellebuyck has not looked like a Vezina Trophy finalist. The Jets goalie has a dismal .870 save percentage and 5.22 GAA in the series. He was pulled in the third period of Game 4 after allowing four goals on 30 shots.

While Hellebuyck hasn’t been at his best, he’s also been left out to dry by a porous defense. Winnipeg’s 4.16 expected goals against per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 is the highest of any team in the first round.

Avs vs Jets Game 5 Prediction

Given the way this series has played out, it’s hard to envision the Jets extending it to a sixth game. While Winnipeg should bring a sense of desperation facing elimination, Colorado has been the far better team in every facet. The Avalanche are faster, deeper, and getting the better goaltending.

Hellebuyck is certainly capable of stealing a game, but he’ll need a lot more help than he’s gotten in front of him. The Jets’ defensive structure has been picked apart and they haven’t found any answers for Colorado’s team speed. Being without Dillon on the backend is a major loss.

The Avs have scored at least five goals in every game and are 12-3 in their last 15 games as a road favorite. Winnipeg, meanwhile, is 1-5 in their last six home games and 17-35 in their last 52 as a home underdog. The Avs moneyline at -120 is the pick.

COL vs WIN Game 5 Pick:

  • Avs ML (-120)
