Massachusetts Gaming Commission Now Has Permanent Chair

  • Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey (D) appointed Jordan Maynard as the permanent chair of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission
  • Maynard has been serving as the interim chair since Cathy Judd-Stein completed her term this past March
  • Healey also appointed former Melrose Mayor Paul Brodeur to serve as a commissioner

Gov. Maura Healey (D) made it official, as Commissioner Jordan Maynard will serve as the permanent chair of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.

Healey appointed Maynard as the chair of the commission earlier this week, elevating him from the role of interim Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) chair that he’s held since former chair Cathy Judd-Stein left the MGC in March.

In addition to naming Maynard permanent chair, Healey also appointed former Melrose mayor Paul Brodeur to serve as commissioner, filling the final vacant seat that has been empty since Judd-Stein retired.

Maynard Takes Full-Time Leadership Role

Healey praised the work Maynard has done as interim chair and lauded his strong leadership for the MGC during the period of transition.

“I’m grateful to Jordan Maynard for providing strong leadership for the Gaming Commission during this transitional period and proud to appoint him as Chair. He has proven to be a consensus builder who has a deep understanding of the agency and strives to do what’s best for the people of Massachusetts,” Gov. Healey said in a press release.

Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll (D) also praised Maynard for the smooth transition and thanked him for stepping up into a leadership role with the MGC.

Maynard was appointed to the MGC by a joint appointment from the governor, attorney general, and treasurer in August 2022. During his time on the MGC, Maynard has helped launch retail and online sports betting in the commonwealth, crafted new rules and regulation for betting, and has supported responsible gaming initiatives focused on player health to protect the citizens of Massachusetts.

“I am humbled by the opportunity to serve the Commonwealth as chair of the Gaming Commission and am grateful to Governor Healey and Lieutenant Governor Driscoll for the trust they have placed in me to carry forward the mission of this incredibly important agency,” Maynard said. “Since being appointed to the Commission in 2022 and through my time as interim chair, I have been consistently impressed with the level of integrity and leadership shown by my fellow commissioners and staff at the MGC.”

MGC Full For First Time Since March

The addition of Brodeur has the MGC now working at full capacity for the first time since March. Brodeur, who is a previous mayor of Melrose and a former state representative, will fill the fifth seat on the commission.

It’s been vacant since March.

“I have great respect for the important work that the Massachusetts Gaming Commission does to oversee and support this industry that is critical for our economy, workforce and competitiveness,” Brodeur said. “This moment more than ever requires leaders who bring people together, look past differences and make progress, and I’m committed to being that type of leadership. I’m grateful to Governor Healey for placing her trust in me to serve as a commissioner, and I look forward to working with Chair Maynard and the entire team at the Gaming Commission.”
