Tulane (6-2, 6-2 ATS) tries to keep pace with Army and Navy atop the AAC when it travels to Jerry Robertson Stadium in Charlotte to take on the 49ers (3-5, 4-4 ATS).
The Green Wave reached the AAC championship game last year and are tied with Army and Navy for first place in the conference. They have won five games in a row and received 28 votes in the latest AP poll. Charlotte is coming off a last-season loss to Memphis.
Defense has been the issue for the 49ers, who also have a bit of a quarterback controversy.

Tulane, ranked at No. 6 in the @HERO_SportsCFB G5 Top 25, improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in AAC play with a 45-37 win over North Texas.

A Rolling Fast Wave
Tulane has been a power in the AAC the last three years, winning the conference title in 2022 and beating USC in the Cotton Bowl. Last year they lost in the AAC Championship game to SMU and coach Willie Fritz headed to Houston.
Enter Jon Sumrall, a former Tulane assistant who had great success at Troy. He’s entrusted the offense to true freshman QB Darian Mensah, who won the job in pre-season over Oregon transfer Ty Thompson. Mensah has thrown for 14 touchdowns. He doesn’t run much, but has good accuracy.
The star of the Green Wave offense is running back Makhi Hughes, who leads the AAC in rushing yards at 939 and is coming off a career-high 195-yard performance against North Texas. The Green Wave offense has 40 plays of 20 yards or more. We love Hughes over 130.5 yards on FanDuel as a prop bet.

Grinding Niners
Niners Coach Biff Poggi was encouraged by his team’s performance as 17-point underdogs against Memphis, losing on a TD pass with 31 seconds left.
The Niners defense has been an issue. They rank 11th in the conference (out of 14) against the run (another reason we love the Hughes over total) and have allowed 34.3 points per game.
Poggi benched quarterback Max Brown at halftime against Memphis, turning things over to 6-foot-4 freshman Deshawn Purdie. He said during the week both quarterbacks will play.
Charlotte’s top offensive weapon is wide receiver O’Mega Blake, a transfer from South Carolina, who is third in the nation with 23.2 yards per catch.
Tulane vs Charlotte Prediction
- Charlotte +14.5 at FanDuel
- Over 55.5 at FanDuel
Any way you want to look at it, Tulane is the superior team. They have a talented offensive line and defensive lineman Patrick Jenkins is a star, but 14.5 points is a lot to give. Tulane dominated North Texas last week, but let the Mean Green score some late touchdowns to make the score look closer than the game. Tulane won by eight when the spread was seven.
That was the same story in Tulane’s win over Rice. The Green Wave are one of just two teams in the country to play two road games in five days (not easy). They will want to get ahead early and then coast home.
Charlotte should have a good home crowd on a Thursday night, and emotion can really help a team in college football. We can see Tulane winning 42-28, with Charlotte getting a backdoor cover.
