The 2025 MLB playoffs will commence on Tuesday, Sep. 30, with a quartet of Game 1s in the Wild Card round. In the American League, the best-of-three Wild Card series will feature the #6 Detroit Tigers vs #3 Cleveland Guardians in an all-Central affair, and #5 Boston Red Sox vs #4 New York Yankees in the latest iteration of baseball’s most-bitter rivalry. In the National League, it’s the #6 Cincinnati Reds vs #3 LA Dodgers, and #4 San Diego Padres vs #3 Chicago Cubs.

MLB Wild Card Series Odds
The better-seeded team will host all games in the Wild Card round. The winner of Red Sox/Yankees will meet the AL #1 Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS, while the winner of Tigers/Guardians will face the #2 Seattle Mariners. In the National League, the #1 Milwaukee Brewers await the winner of Padres/Cubs, and the #2 Philadelphia Phillies will face the winner of Reds/Dodgers.

Wild Card Series Betting Trends
The strongest Wild Card round betting trend is the under. Since the playoffs were expanded to 12 teams in 2022, under 2.5 games has hit in 10 out of 12 best-of-three Wild Card series. Last year, only the Brewers/Mets series went the full three games.
Including the ad hoc 2020 playoffs, which featured eight best-of-three Wild Card series (due to COVID-19-motivated changes), under 2.5 games is 16-4.
But don’t go assuming the chalk is going to sweep. The better-seeded team is only 4-8 in the 12 best-of-three Wild Card series since postseason expansion. Only one team with home-field advantage advanced from the Wild Card round: the #4 Padres bounced the #5 Braves in the minimum two games.
Opening Padres vs Cubs Wild Card Series Odds & Schedule
Runners-up to the Brewers and Phillies, respectively, the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres meet in a heavyweight NL Wild Card series. The Cubs have opened as modest -125 favorites with the Padres at +105 to pull the upset.
The teams split their regular-season series 3-3, with each team winning two of three at home. The Cubs finished the regular season with a run differential nearly double that of the Padres (+142 vs +73).
Chicago hasn’t won a playoff series since 2016, losing its last three attempts. The Padres are 3-0 in the Wild Card round since 2020.

The defending World Series-champion Dodgers are the biggest favorite of the Wild Card round, opening at -245 to oust the Reds (+205). Los Angeles was 5-1 against Cincinnati in the regular season.

New York has opened as a solid -165 favorite over the Red Sox. Boston was an impeccable 9-4 against the Yankees in the regular season, though New York won three of the last four after a 1-8 record in the first nine head-to-head this year.
The Yankees have Max Fried (2.86 ERA, 1.10 WHIP) and Carlos Rodon (3.09 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) cued up for Games 1 and 2, while the Red Sox will likely counter with Garrett Crochet (2.59 ERA, 1.03 WHIP) and Lucas Giolito (3.41 ERA, 1.29 WHIP).

Opening Tigers vs Guardians Wild Card Odds & Schedule
The Cleveland Guardians, who were nine games back of the Detroit Tigers for the AL Central lead early in September, completed an epic comeback to win the division. But with Detroit able to trot out soon-to-be two-time Cy Young-winner Tarik Skubal in Game 1, the Tigers/Guardians odds list both teams at -110 in what oddsmakers have deemed a pick’em series.
The Guardians finished the season 8-5 against the Tigers, including five of the last six.
