So, it feels like the New York Giants are starting over, sort of. The New York Giants will keep GM Joe Schoen for now. After their third consecutive losing season, New York appears to be moving on from interim head coach Mike Kafka. The Giants have had a winning record only three times since their last Super Bowl win in 2012. Now, the hot seat will turn on Schoen if he cannot find a sustainable solution. Shula’s Name Makes a Lot Of Sense Here
Every potential coaching candidate in this pool carries some risk. There’s no sure thing as teams will have to accept some imperfections while hoping for the best. Partially, that explains why so many candidates are bunched pretty close together. Some focus on the old connections while others believe this hire will definitely highlight the more offensive components.
The Giants just could not get the quarterback coach to work with the groceries on offense. There was no way in Hades the Giants were going to stand pat. It was also a reason why New York is so desperate to win some games and get close to a playoff spot.
Look at some of those offensive ranks. Yikes!
Giants Scoring Offense/Defense Ranks – Last 5 Years
Again, New York’s offense seemed to come alive when Jaxson Dart took over. Any potential head coach will have to get even more out of Dart while trying to figure out the offensive line and a more consistent 1A starting running game. That is the tip of the iceberg. Naturally, the defense is of some concern too. This is why a coach like Shula is importance. His concentration is defense but he knows a thing or two about offense. The family pedigree leads right up to Don Shula, his grandfather.
New York knows it needs to go in another direction. Shula has worked with the likes of Sean McVay. He has been with the Rams for eight seasons now and been the defensive coordinator for two years. Shula brings forth some new wrinkles on both sides of the ball.
Spagnuolo, Pierce Have Little Chance
New York needs a coach that a team can grow with. It is no secret. The Giants have seen too much turnover and mind you, it was warranted. The problem with Antonio Pierce and Steve Spagnuolo failed in their head coaching attempts. New York needs a coach that can get the most out of his players. Brian Flores would be an okay choice but there was all that baggage from his time with Miami. Would the Giants take such a risk?
There have been some changes but honestly Flores is still a ticking time bomb while Shula is just a little better here. He is worthy of a chance in New York. After all, nothing else has worked.
