The night cap on the NBA’s four-game playoff extravaganza pits the Rockets vs the Lakers in Game 1 of their Western Conference 1st Round series. Online sportsbooks aren’t giving LA much of a chance in the NBA odds without Luka Doncic, but I think the bigger area of concern for the Lakers is on the glass.

My favorite NBA props bet tonight is over 7.5 rebounds for Amen Thompson. The Jack of all trades guard is an absolute menace on the glass, and has torched LA there this season. I’m also betting under 9.5 assists for LeBron James, as I believe bookmakers are expecting him to shoulder way too much of the playmaking role without Doncic.

Houston brings the number one rated rebounding group into action, while also ranking tops in offensive rebounding. It’s their super power, and a big reason they’re expected to be a force in the NBA Championship odds. In their three outings versus the Lakers this season, the Rockets rebounded 40% of their own misses, with Thompson accounting for an average of 4 offensive boards per game.
He averaged 10 rebounds per outing in total against LA over their three matchups, and has cleared 7.5 boards in seven of his last 10 games overall. He ranks second on the team in boards behind Alperen Sengun, but has been the more consistent performer on the glass over the last month and a half.
As for James, online sportsbooks aggressively bumped his assist prop up to 9.5 for this playoff contest, in response to the absence of Doncic and Austin Reaves to a lesser extend. Some commercial books have already moved the line down to 8.5, but you can still find 9.5’s out there if you’re willing to pay some juice.
LeBron James Assists and Minutes vs Rockets This Season
While James will undoubtedly take on heavy playmaking duties versus the Rockets, this inflated total completely disrespects Houston’s elite defensive structure. Houston actively prevents fluid ball movement, holding opponents to only 24.5 assists per game, the second lowest total in the NBA.
James averaged 7.2 assists per game during the regular season, and while he has experienced an uptick in production since Doncic went down, his big games were against bottom feeders. When facing elite defensive competition he didn’t come close to reaching 10 assists, racking up only six a piece versus the Thunder and Cavs.
