Jaylen Brown Trade Sends Celtics’ NBA Championship Odds Tumbling

Another blockbuster transaction is in the works in the NBA.

On Wednesday night, reports surfaced that the Boston Celtics are trading five-time All-Star Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for aging Paul George and an as-yet-unspecified haul of draft picks (two first-roundsrs and two second-rounders, according to Shams Charania).

In the wake of the news, the NBA Championship odds moved significantly. The movement made Philly GM Daryl Morey look like a genius while fans in Boston were calling for the head of Brad Stevens.

Boston, which had been the third favorite, fell from 12 cents at prediction site Kalshi all the way to 9 cents. That’s the equivalent of fading from +733 to +1011 in traditional sports-betting terms.

The decline dropped the Celtics to fourth-favorite, below reigning-champion New York (10 cents or +900).

The OKC Thunder (25 cents or +300) and San Antonio Spurs (21 cents or +376) continue to dominate the board.

While the Celtics were dropping the 76ers were rising to an even greater degree. Philadelphia had been priced at just 2 cents (+4900) on Wednesday morning. As of 11:46 pm ET on Wednesday night, Brown’s new team is trading at 6 cents (+1567), which is tied with Golden State for fifth-favorite, right behind Boston.

If you believe the media, Brown has long been unhappy as the second option to Jayson Tatum, and his time in Boston has been rumored to be coming to a close for months. But the Celtics faithful had their hearts set on two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was traded to the Miami Heat last week.

George played his best basketball in a Philly jersey in the team’s playoff comeback against the Celtics this April. He was integral in rallying the Sixers from a 3-1 deficit, just the 15th team to do so. He averaged 17.4 points, four boards, and three dimes in the seven-game series while shooting 55% from deep.

Still, the 36-year-old is seen as less of a consolation price for Boston fans and more as an anthropomorphized walking boot.

Former Celtics turned ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins was among the talking heads lampooning the deal from the Boston side.

The 2026-27 NBA schedule hasn’t been set yet, but the Atlantic Division rivals are guaranteed to play each other four times next year (twice in Boston, twice in Philadelphia).
