The NBA is basically holding its breath. LeBron James told the Lakers he was leaving almost three weeks ago, and the biggest free agent in the league still hasn’t said a word about where he’s going.
The wait is jamming up the whole offseason. Adam Silver can’t finish next year’s schedule, James Harden is still unsigned in Cleveland, and a chunk of the Warriors’ summer is frozen too. Rich Paul hopped on his podcast this week and told everyone to settle in.
The prediction markets are the one place the waiting turns into hard numbers, and right now they’ve got the top of the board tighter than it’s been all month.

It’s a two-team race in the LeBron next team odds, and it’s basically a coin flip. Cleveland sits at 37% on Kalshi with Miami right on top of them at 35%, close enough that one report could swap them by tonight.
The rest of the board is a long way back. Golden State is third at 16%, Philadelphia is at 12%, and Minnesota is hanging on at 2%. Those three are all waiting on a swing that hasn’t happened yet.
There’s a mountain of money on this one. More than $186 million has traded on the market. Cleveland and Miami have taken turns on top for three weeks now, and neither can pull away.

Cleveland and Miami Lead the LeBron Odds Race
Everybody points to the Cleveland homecoming, but the roster deserves more attention. The Cavs made the Eastern Conference finals last year without him. That team ran on Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.
Harden hasn’t even re-signed yet, and that’s on purpose. It keeps Cleveland’s money flexible while they wait. Brian Windhorst keeps saying the vibes point back to Ohio, even if he’ll only call it a hunch.
Miami is where LeBron won his two rings, so this pull goes past nostalgia. Shams Charania says Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra are both part of the sell. Giannis Antetokounmpo is in on it too, and he reportedly wants LeBron in South Beach.
Put LeBron next to an NBA MVP odds regular like Giannis, and the Heat have two guys who can win a game alone. Florida also has no state income tax, the quiet edge execs keep bringing up.
Where Golden State and Philadelphia Fit the LeBron Odds
The Warriors are still in it, but the reporting keeps them a step below the top two. They need to swing an Anthony Davis trade to really move the needle, and that hasn’t come together.
Draymond Green kept things interesting this week, using part of his podcast to lay out how he’d play off a LeBron-Curry pick-and-roll.
Philadelphia is the sneaky one at 12% after landing Jaylen Brown, and LeBron is reportedly taking their pitch seriously. A trio of him, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey looks better on paper than what Golden State can offer right now.
So When Does LeBron Actually Pick a Team?
Kalshi runs a whole separate market on when the announcement drops, and it just cratered. The odds of a decision before July 26 fell 36 points in a single day to 44%, so the market has given up on a quick answer.
The people around the league feel the same way. Dave McMenamin says there’s no big rollout in the works, and some team executives have started booking family vacations. Nobody books a vacation if they think LeBron is signing in the next 48 hours.
LeBron gave a New York crowd the only hint anyone’s gotten last week, telling them he “won’t hold you guys up too much longer.” That’s as close to a timeline as it gets.
Until he talks, this stays a Cleveland-Miami fight with the Warriors and Sixers lurking. Whoever gets him jumps right up the NBA Championship odds board. And on a market that flips on a single Shams tweet, the Kalshi board is the one to keep open.
