A massive heavyweight tilt is on tap in the World Cup quarterfinals this Friday when Spain clash with Belgium in Inglewood, CA.

Since a 0-0 draw with tournament darling Cape Verde on the first matchday, Spain have been unimpeachable, outscoring their next four opponents 9-0.

Belgium played by far their best game of the World Cup to date on Monday night, routing the USA 4-1 in Seattle on the strength of a brace and an assist from Charles De Ketelaere. As impressive as the Atlanta man was, Spain has opened as a big favorite to reach the semifinals.

Spain Continues Shutout Streak

Spain hard one of the toughest draws of the Round of 16, facing Iberian rival Portugal. After shutting out their three group-stage opponents (Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay) and Austria in the Round of 32 (3-0), all La Roja did on Monday was hold Cristiano Ronaldo and company to no goals and 0.63 cGF over 90 minutes.

Spain didn’t break through until a 90+1 go-ahead goal from Mikel Merino but they were the better side throughout. La Roja outshot Portugal 15-10 (6-2 on target) and generated 1.62 xGF.

Belgium Shatters American Dreams

Just when American soccer fans started dreaming their men’s team could compete with the world’s elite, Belgium played the role of unrelenting older brother on Monday night.

Starting up front instead of Romelu Lukaku, Atalanta midfielder Charles de Ketelaere blossomed in the number nine position. He scored two first-half goal to stake his team to a thoroughly deserved 2-1 lead at the break before pressuring keeper Brian Freese into a horrendous mistake on Hans Vanaken’s insurance marker in the 57th minute.

Belgium generated just over 2.0 xGF in the first hour before cruising through the final 30 minutes.

Spain has largely dominated the head-to-head history with Belgium, winning 12, drawing five, and losing five. But the Belgians will be quick to remind them that the most-recent meeting is nearly a decade old: a 2-0 Spain victory in a 2016 friendly.

Belgium and Spain have met eight times at the World Cup; Spain is 5-2-1 and has won the last five in a row dating back to 1990.
