Nearly seven months after winning his first world title fight, Ryan Garcia (25-2, 1 NC) puts the WBC welterweight championship on the line against Conor Benn (25-1). Garcia makes the walk for his inaugural title defense, while the Englishman Benn prepares for his first world title fight.
Garcia and Benn meet in the ring after nearly a full year of constant back-and-forth banter. The fight was seemingly pushed out of reach when Benn aligned with the defiant Zuffa Boxing, but a surprising co-promotion between Dana White and Oscar De La Hoya brought the matchup to light.
Garcia walks into his first title defense after dominating Mario Barrios to win the title in February. Although most expected him to win that fight, Garcia impressed by dominating with his improved boxing in a clean decision victory.
Benn enters the fight five months after a convincing, yet still slightly disappointing win over Regis Prograis. The fight served as his official Zuffa Boxing debut after he shockingly left longtime promoter Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.
Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn Prediction
- Boxing Picks: Conor Benn Moneyline (+240 on Bet365)
Throughout their careers, Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn have both been brawlers more than technical fighters, but each has improved their boxing in recent years. Garcia showed off his improved form in his recent domination of Mario Barrios, while Benn clearly added layers to his game before his rematch with Chris Eubank Jr.
While Garcia might be the slightly more technical boxer, Benn’s style could be a uniquely difficult style matchup for him. ‘The Destroyer’ brings a lot of unorthodox movement and angle-cutting, which he combines with precise accuracy and timely body work. Historically, Garcia has not done as well as expected against fighters who force him to change up his offensive attacks.
Still, Garcia’s left hook is always the great equalizer and the biggest singular threat either fighter owns in this matchup. Benn is durable, but the power threat he faces on Saturday night is much higher than anything he has gone up against to date.
While the weight-cutting narrative is overblown, Benn has owned significant physical advantages over most of his recent opponents. He will not have that upper hand on Garcia.
Both Garcia and Benn can be frustratingly inconsistent at times, but each vowed to bring the action in this fight, believing they are the bigger man. That type of car crash creates a lot of volatility, and it has historically been the type of matchup Garcia thrives in. However, we are siding with the value on Benn’s movement and diverse offense in what could be a sell-high opportunity on Garcia, who is just 2-2 with one no-contest in his last five fights.
